One Little Goal

January is all about new beginnings, and as a result we all have so many goals — I have lists upon lists.

But since my biggest goal this year was to simplify, I thought I’d start a new tradition. Each month, I’ll pick one little goal to focus on. The only requirements are that the goal be 1) relatively easy to accomplish and 2) something that will improve my life.

It’s simple and, kind of like checking a box off on a list, it provides a little sense of accomplishment – the kind that usually is reward enough to keep moving on to bigger and better things.

Plus, I’m pretty sure these tiny changes are more likely to stick, since it takes around 21 (28? 20-something…) days to create a habit, and I’m giving it around 30 before I try to tackle something new.

So, for January (we’re well into the month already I know… but it’s a long one) I’m focusing on coffee.

Long long ago, my coffee bill was pretty small. I like my coffee black, so I just made it at home.

Then I started commuting… and I could blame it on time, but to be honest, I really just like to preserve my train time for the possibility of a nap (don’t judge)… so I started leaving my coffee for the walk to work.

At first, I bought a cup at the local bakery, it was super cheap and better than what I can get in the office, but it wasn’t long before I started to drift over to the almost-like-hot-chocolate-y goodness of Starbucks, and I’ve been going more and more often as time has gone on.

So my tiny goal (okay it’s sounding bigger and bigger as I write this) is to buy less at Starbucks. I don’t need the calories or the cost (I’m pretty sure my increased tax bill just ate my coffee fund) and I can still easily make my own (I actually have a tiny Keurig in my office… I have no excuse).

I’m not saying I’m giving up cold Turkey — special trips to the better coffee shop down the street aren’t going anywhere, and I’m not sure I can give up our Saturday morning drive-through on the way to Austin’s karate — but I am cutting down.

It’s a little goal to keep in mind that doesn’t take up too much space in my head, can be accomplished fairly simply, and (I think) will significantly improve my life (Mark’s on the other hand, I don’t know… I’ll let you know.  I think it’s all going to hinge on how much coffee is available in the house… it could get ugly…).
