The 3 Best Ways to Get Involved in Alt NYC from Home

the 3 best ways to participate in Alt NYC without going / a thousand threads
I’ve been talking and tweeting and instagramming (can we find a better verb for this guy? gram-am-am-ing awkward word…) more and more about Alt NYC as the date nears, so it goes without saying that I’m pret-ty excited. But I know what it’s like to be on the other side. In fact for two years now I’ve been living vicariously through the lucky ladies who’ve attended Alt SLC, wishing I was there (let’s not pretend that’s ended of course, I still desperately want to make it to SLC).

Over those two years, though, I’ve learned that there are a lot of awesome ways you can participate in – and benefit from – Alt even without being there. And make some pretty great friends along the way.

Here are the three best ways you can get involved from home…

1 // Join in on social media.

Even when we’re all in a big room together, we’re still here on the web… and super excited to share what we’re learning. Blogging is about community! Twitter, Instagram, Facebook… I’d be willing to bet that 110 percent of the folks attending Alt will be updating at least one if not all of these platforms and more. I know I will. You can follow your favorites, set up a stream to follow certain hashtags (like #altsummit and #altnyc) and even join in on (and take over, since she’ll be in attendance this time around) MJ’s tongue-in-cheek #altsummitwannabe hashtag to chat with fellow followers.

2 // Take an Alt Channel class.

You might already know all about Alt’s online classes, but if you don’t you should. They’re a great way to gain the same kind of knowledge you’d get in person at Alt and network with tons of great like-minded folks looking for the same information. In each class, a blogroll is set up so you can check out your fellow classmates and drop them a note to say “hi.” The class serves as an instant connection and a great conversation-starter. And in the process, you’ll learn tons of great tips to improve your blog.

3 // Reach out to sponsors.

This is an important one, and one I need to do more of myself! Alt is a wonderful way to bring bloggers together with sponsors face-to-face, but there is no reason why you shouldn’t be contacting potential sponsors outside these kind of events. If you love a brand and you’re looking for sponsors, shoot them a pitch! Make it professional and you might be surprised at how open to ideas they can be.

If you’re wondering where to start, this is one of the best tutorials I’ve seen on how to pitch your favorite brands.
