The Billy Goat Trail + Some Sad Rooftop Fireworks // Our 4th

One of the first trails Mark, Austin and I ever hiked together (Austin was still riding in a backpack at the time) was the Billy Goat Trail at Great Falls.  The trail is like a little oasis so close to the city, and is one of my favorite places in Maryland, so this 4th of July we decided to take Austin again to celebrate six years.  This time, though, he didn’t need any help getting around… in fact he ran circles around us.  “What are we waiting for?” was the phrase of the day.

And judging by this worn out shot I’m gonna say it was me…

Of course I wasn’t the one hiking in cold wet shorts after swearing to only go in up to my knees…

(He was a pretty good sport about it, actually… as hot as it was, Mark and I probably should have followed suit.)

Even the deer couldn’t stay out of the water…

After our hike, we cleaned up and went out for a (very patriotic) meal at a Mexican restaurant in Frederick, and thought we were just the smartest folks around when we grabbed a prime spot on the roof of a parking garage for the fireworks.

This way we wouldn’t have to deal with the crowds, we’d have a better view, we could listen to music… smiles all around.

Or… maybe not…

We may have misjudged the height a bit… along with the 145 other people who joined us… who must have somehow clogged the reception because I couldn’t connect to Spotify to save my life…

So… it was a quiet night, craning our necks to see what we could… but hey, it was ours.  I wouldn’t have had it any other way.
