Race Weekend in Utica

It’s always nice to get away, even if its just for a short time. Our trip was full of good food, laughs and lots of long naps… which, after a nonstop couple of weeks, is just what we needed.

And as a little extra bonus, look who we saw!

Do you watch The Biggest Loser? Mark and I were way into it last season, so Danni’s talk at the race expo was pretty exciting… and insanely inspiring. She talked a little bit about the ranch (did you know they work out three times a day and when they’re not working out they’re hiking or walking — always moving?) and about working through injuries (everyone there had shin splints and pain – she had a torn meniscus – but they didn’t stop). She talked about her father, and how his time in the hospital inspired her to lose weight… and how now her success has inspired him.

Watching it on the show is one thing, but listening to her talk I was blow away by what it takes to do what she did.

Race day was hot – hotter than I remember it ever being before – and all of our race times suffered a little as a result. On top of that, Mark and I both had to acknowledge that our training hasn’t been as consistent as it should… and I realized that I still have some serious work to do before I’m anywhere near where I want to be at marathon time.

It’s a good thing we had all of that inspiration heaped on us at the expo, cause I’m gonna need it.

After the race we were beat, so we laid down for a quick nap, then woke up for sushi at one of the best places we’ve found (which just so happens to be in Utica, go figure).

We spent the rest of the weekend relaxing and catching up, watching our wedding video with the family (cue me bawling) and hitting all of the requisite stops along the way — Voss’s for grilled cheese and pork barbeque, Florentines for pastries, the Riverside Diner for sweet potato hash, and FX Matt to stock up on beer… we missed Joe’s this time around (a girl can only eat so much) but we’ll be back soon… and, of course, the best food of the whole weekend is always at home. That pasta is the stuff of dreams.
