Floral Inspiration: Poppies

poppy
Of all the temptation one suffers through planning a wedding, I’ve managed to resist, well, a little.

I love flowers more than I can say.  So believe me, my decision to DIY is not for lack of respect for incredible women like Kate and Kelly — whose bouquets I would gladly give my right arm for.  But a girl has to pinch a penny here and there… and flowers are one thing I’ve decided my limited crafting skills might allow.  So, research wonk that I am, I’ve set off to learn as much as I possibly can about the flowers I might be able to use.  And, along the way, I thought I might share a little of the information I learn.

Starting with one of my very favorites… poppies.

Hair and Makeup: Check + The Etiquette

catherine mead jose villa workshop
Add a check mark to another box — I’ve booked my hair and makeup for the big day!

To be honest, this was another one of those things I went back and forth on.  Should I do my own?  Should I have a professional come to me?  What kind of etiquette applies to bridal party hair and makeup?

I was pretty lost on every one of these questions.  All I knew was that on my day, I want to look like me… and I’ve seen too many brides who just… don’t.  So quality became a big concern if I went professional… and I considered doing my own more than once (which I’ve seen lots of brides do successfully — it’s is so easy with all of the amazing tips out there).

In the process, I learned that the etiquette for this particular question is all over the place.

Love // A Surprise Proposal at Griffith Observatory

This entire proposal was caught by the fabulous Keith Dunlop, who tells the story here…

I can’t imagine a better way to draw a close to my 2011 wedding season than with a preamble to the coming year. I’ve known Chris casually over the last couple of years through an online photography forum, and he owns some of my used camera gear. Last month I received a random call from Chris telling me that he was proposing to his girlfriend in LA and could I photograph it! Needless-to-say I was thrilled at the unique opportunity.

The setup involved Brittany and a group of friends visiting the Griffith Observatory for a surprise birthday party. Brittany was not aware that the surprise birthday party was actually a ruse to disguise the surprise proposal. It was a perfect plan, perfectly executed by Chris and their friends. All I had to do was blend in with the tourists, act natural, and capture it all on film. It was great fun for me as a photographer, and best of all — she said YES! Well done Chris.

A Little Inspiration: Winter Warmth

Swing / Suitcase / Cakes / Turntable / Book / Coke / Bride / Reindeer / Table / Cabin / Tree

It’s been much too long since I posted an inspiration board, and since it doesn’t feel like winter here at all, I thought I’d try and create my own.

I love that despite the cold, this board still feels warm and cozy.  Right now I would like nothing more than to be curled up in that cabin, sipping hot cocoa and humming along to Christmas songs with my honey.  I can’t believe I’m saying it… but I’m kind of ready for some snow.

A Perfect Christmas Proposal

Lance and Kathryn have known each other since the fifth grade, so Lance had to be tricky to hide his plan from this girl who knows him so well.  He decided to talk her into a Christmas photo shoot (such a fun idea, even without the proposal) and, because she might suspect that something was up, wait until the very end to get down on one knee and propose.

The best part?  The whole thing was captured by the talented Melissa McCrotty who pulled of an unbelievably gorgeous Christmas shoot in the process.

A Little Inspiration: Hi-Fi Hues

Table Setting / Throw / Concert Poster Invite / Bridal Inspiration / CD Programs / Flowers

Today’s inspiration board isn’t just filled with gorgeous bright hues, perfect for any season, it also contains some of the best musical inspiration I’ve seen.  A concert poster as an invite, a program that imitates a CD with “all you need is love” printed on the front and a mock playlist on the back.  Take that and mix it with a little vintage romance… the combination is sheer perfection.

A Little Inspiration: Eclectic Autumn

Bouquet / Couple / Bridesmaids / Jam / Peach Galette / Baskets / Table

I love the fall… especially here on the east coast.  Something inside me feels immediately cozy at the mere thought.  Warm colors, warm food, and the warm company of family and friends as the holidays begin… the season is just the best.

The only problem is that, when it comes to design, the season can also become a little monotonous… there is almost a sense of obligation to plan with, and even wear, the colors of the leaves…which can only be attributed to the fact that the things really are damn inspiring.

But there are so many other options out there.  In my opinion, a fall wedding palette should feel warm… cozy.  Beyond that, I can’t imagine a single limitation that should be in place.  In fact, the farther from the norm the better, and I’m loving this peach and purple palette.  While a peach is anything but a fall fruit, the last of the summer peaches often linger well into September… and the color, well the color stays around all year.

Love // Robert & Trisha

I can’t get over these two.  I swear that Robert and Trisha belong in a magazine… they are just the most gorgeous couple!

Plus, I’m a big big sucker for the Pacific Northwest.  The couple traveled up the coast from California to Washington to get married in the same venue as the bride’s parents many years ago… and (besides the obvious sentimentality!) I can see why.
