Happy Holiday Weekend!

Even though the weekend promises to be busy with preparations for family coming to town next week, I am so looking forward to Sunday.

I’ve always loved Easter.  When I was little, my mom (or, erm… the bunny) used to make me a little scavenger hunt that I would follow all the way to my basket.  The hunt was just as much fun as the basket itself.  Now that I’m older, I am equally excited to hunt all the way to my very favorite restaurant for Easter brunch.  Not to mention waking up early for mass and searching out Easter eggs in Mark’s parents’ backyard.  Easter is always a nice time spent with family and friends.

Tell me, do you have any special plans for this weekend?  Are you as excited as I am?

Here are a few things I’m loving this week…

This fantastic New Orleans wedding… every single bit of it is perfect.

These bright yellow earrings.

Peeeeeeps!

And in case you’re not quite as into marshmallows as I am… these.

I wasn’t sure what kind of reaction I might encounter when I hit “publish” on yesterday’s post, but I was so pleasantly surprised.  Thank you all for your kind words here and in person, I can’t tell you how much they mean.

I hope that I am able to help a few brides in some small way… and I hope you all know how much you (and this blog) help me every day to sort out, share, and someday look back on this crazy adventure.  All of my love goes out to those of you who find yourself planning as well.  It’s a tough journey, but oh so worthy of making.

I hope you all have a beautiful weekend!  I’m planning on a nice, relaxing, slightly rainy one (just as beautiful as any) hopefully curled up with a new book.  Let me know if you have any good recommendations!!

Here are a few things I’m loving this week…

Overgrown bouquets.

This awesome and super-easy DIY camera strap.

Chalkboard paint and good advice.

Ohh… Up.

This cake that turned out even better than expected.

Pink watercolor place cards.

It’s almost the weekend!

Seriously, put a few extra exclamation points on that statement above.  I’m having a little celebration here in my office.  Just a few short hours and the weekend begins.

The last couple of weeks have felt veeery long… so long, in fact, that I haven’t yet had the time to write a pretty important update on our planning.  One that has been in the works for a while, but finally came full circle (the nicest possible way of putting it) late last week.

I promise I will fill you all in next week, so be sure to check back, but the short story is… we’ve made some changes.  Everything will be a lot more simple, but just as beautiful, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

In the mean time, though, I have to go watch me some Hunger Games (yes, no shame here, I’m obsessed) with my guy — who surprised me mid-week by buying advanced tickets, just to be sure I got to see it… no chances of selling out.

See you all back here soon!  Here are a few things I’m loving…

The inspiration I keep coming back to here and here.

This site that I read literally every post on after I discovered it… it makes me laugh.

This has my mouth watering already for our trip in May.

I want!

I love this.

Happy Friday!

The weather is beginning to warm, daylight savings is just around the corner, and we just bought tickets to our first two concerts of the season… even though the winter was a little elusive this year, the warm weather never quite had that feeling that spring and summer do.  There is just something that is so much happier, more hopeful… just all around better about this time of year.

I’m loving the plans, the possibilities, and the fact that before another winter rolls around, I’ll be a married lady.  The excitement is building!

Here are a few more things I’m loving this week…

Happy Friday!

I know it’s a little cliché, but wow.  The time between your engagement and your wedding… it flies.  In just a month my mom will be here to help me pick out my dress.  The date was chosen because it was fairly close to the wedding… close enough that I wouldn’t regret my choice, but far enough away for alterations.  It seemed so distant in July, but winter has come (sort of) and gone and spring is nearly here.

Just one month after (in May) we’ll be in California for our engagement shots, hair and makeup trials, tastings… all the final touches.  Then it’s summer… and soon after we’ll be married…

I know it’s still a lot of time.  Some people plan an entire wedding over the course of the time we have left.  But to me, it seems like no time at all.  I know how fast the next few months will fly, and right now, if I could ask for anything in the world, it would simply be the ability to enjoy this moment.  To take a deep breath and really savor the fact that I’m about to marry my best friend… the guy I love.  Despite all of the planning and prepping that threatens to get in the way, I couldn’t be more excited about that fact.

But, on another note (because the planning really is fun sometimes): Where I should take my mom on her very first trip to NYC?  I’m working on ideas now and I know there are more than a few of you out there with some really good advice.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend!

Have you read A Practical Wedding?  Because it truly is amazing.  And oh-so relevant to planning a real wedding in this day and age — straight talk, no bs, no long list of must-haves.  I wish I had read it before this journey began.  I’m not sure I would have done anything differently… but I might have found a little comfort in its honesty.

Then again, maybe now is the perfect time to read this book.  This morning I laughed out loud while reading Kayce Hazelgrove’s “The Six Stages of Wedding Planning,” including #1. Euphoria: “Squeee,” #2. Discovery: “Ooooh, pretty,” #3. Panic: “How the hell?,” #4. Outrage/Depression: “What the eff,” “Eff me,” and #5. Rebellion: “Eff it.”  In this fifth stage, “It is not uncommon to find yourself telling overzealous friends and family where to stick their ‘helpful suggestions.'”

Recently, I’ve found myself floating somewhere in between numbers four and five, feeling like a crazy person and a little alone in my insanity.  My groom has an uncanny ability to be calm approximately 99.8 percent of the time… so that feeling that there might be a crazy person lurking somewhere in the house is particularly prominent when I’m off my rocker.

Thankfully, after breaking down a little, I was promptly reminded by a few fantastic friends that it would all be okay… my feelings were normal and my day would be beautiful.  Sometimes, in the midst of a breakdown, all you need is to be told.

The stages end in #6: Zen: “It is what it is.”

Having progressed through the other five stages, you are left with a feeling of having done all you could do.  Calmness sets in.  You accept that things will go wrong but understand that they won’t take away from the beauty of the day.  This stage is often followed by the drinking of copious amounts of alcohol and the shaking of your bottom.

It’s not that this concept is a foreign one. It’s the same reassurance my friends and family have steeped upon me in the past few weeks… but it’s good to hear, to have that reassurance that what you’re going through is normal and in the end, it will all be okay.

If you haven’t read the book, get it now… I’m loving it like crazy this week, along with these few other things…

Speaking of APW, I also love spreadsheets.

This lovely dahlia arrangement.

Everything about this awesome wedding, Part 1 and Part 2.

A letter from Johnny to June.

The gorgeous bridal shots, the morning of.

Things to worry about.

Valentines Day… which was perfect for a million reasons, including the amazing meal we had here.

Is it Friday Already?

I’m not going to lie, I’ve had a breakdown or two over the past few months.

Planning a wedding is hard… and not just in the sense that it’s a lot of work (although… it is).  Planning a wedding is also hard in the sense that there are a lot of competing interests, even within yourself, that you somehow have to beat into submission long enough to allow one — the right one — to rise to the top.

Now, some people might not take this route.  They might sit back, zen-like, and let the right choice come to them…. but not me.  I tend to like to bash my head against a wall.

To be honest, I’m really lucky.  I have laid back parents, a relatively stable financial life (for now) and a fiancé who would go to the ends of the earth to bring me a little light.  I don’t have a lot to complain about.  Mostly — it’s just me.

From the DJ to the decor to the size, shape, and everything in between, I’ve debated each little option to death.  A million brides and bridal blogs will tell you not to do this.  Don’t flip out.  Yes, it’s an important day… but what really matters is that you are marrying the person you love.

Well, yes.  But I’ll never be the person who takes that advice and breathes a sigh of relief.  Because if that were truly the case, we would go to the courthouse tomorrow.  We would have eloped.  But the honest truth is that we want to celebrate our big fat love in front of all of our friends and we want it to be perfect… we might even want to impress them a little (admit it).

And why not?  The darn thing is expensive.  If it were just about us we would take a month-long vacation around the world and get married by a sherpa in Bhutan… but we want to celebrate with the ones we love.  And because they’re involved, the scope of the celebration widens.  We start to make choices to please our guests, instead of ourselves.

But somewhere in there — there is a balance.  And maybe I need to talk to the zen master I mentioned earlier (any of you out there?) but what works for me is to occasionally say “screw everyone else.”

This serves to knock my nagging desire to please back down to size… and put me back within the realm of “eager to please… but sufficiently selfish.”

I like that balance best.

And I do still want to share links… if you’re not sick of hearing from me by now!

Here are a few things I’m loving…

Brightly colored pants.

… maybe even printed pants?

This simple, pretty table.

The honey badger… in drink form.

Pretty lingerie.

Yes.

This looks delicious.

Everything is really beginning to take shape.  Now that we have the majority of our vendors nailed down, we finally have a little freedom to brainstorm what this thing might actually look like… and we even booked our tickets for a trip to California in May.  We’ll be able to meet with all of our vendors and, most importantly, take our engagement shots!

Now it’s time to decide what kind of engagement shots they might be.

I’m a big fan of something simple, like the shot above, but we’re still very much up in the air on a location.  Any and all suggestions would definitely be welcome.

Here are a few things I’m loving this week…

How to tie a bow tie.

This sweet little film by Garance Doré.

Good advice.

Six tasty tips for a foodie wedding.

This awesome outdoor wedding… especially that dress and bouquet.

These gorgeous valentines cards.
