{Real Weddings} Lindie & Nate’s Botanical Bash

With so many options out there, I know how hard it can sometimes be to come up with the perfect theme.  But occasionally, a couple can be so lucky that the theme comes to them.

This was definitely the case for Lindie and Nate, all they needed was the right venue…

From the start, we knew that we didn’t want the typical country club or hotel wedding.  One visit to the the Botanical Center was all we needed to decide that it was the unique setting that we had been in search of.  Before choosing a venue, we had a really hard time narrowing down a palette, graphics and other design elements for our wedding but the gardens provided direct inspiration for all of that and our wedding theme quickly grew…even the dress was chosen with the venue in mind.  With a background in art & design, I was heavily invested in adding handmade personal touches…table runners, basket liners and a ring pillow from linen and silk dupioni, and invitations and programs with custom graphics.  A lot of people didn’t understand why I was putting in so much time creating these items but to us it completely finished the look and added something totally special that spoke to who were are.  We decided a station style reception worked best for the format of the Botanical Center.  Colorful tapas plates were available throughout the gardens and we had a cupcake variety (banana nutella and chocolate peanut butter included – yum!) and strawberry shortcake instead of a typical cake.  Our day was absolutely amazing…our families are a wild bunch but it still felt very relaxed; the ceremony went off without a hitch; and we got to share some incredible, intimate moments with the people we are closest with.  We wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.

{Real Weddings} Martha & Brian

Oh be still my heart… I think you already know that nothing gets to me more than a gorgeous ranch wedding… especially when it’s set in the heart of wine country!  Martha and Brian were married at Beltane Ranch with a yellow and gray birdhouse theme… yellow to match the venue and gray because it is Martha’s favorite color.  Every detail was special to the couple… they even had a close friend officiate, and because Martha and Brian spent three years far apart, depending greatly upon their Apple products to connect, their officiant read from an iPad covered in yellow, and their reader from an iPhone.

… how cute is that?!

And Martha was sweet enough to answer some questions for me!

How did you choose your venue… did it have any special significance?

We both live in PA but many of our family members live in Northern CA and the bay area, so we chose the Napa/Sonoma area because first of location. I really was the one who found Beltane Ranch through online research. I always envisioned getting married outdoors, in a farm/country setting with many colors, flowers (rustic style if you would say). I found Beltane Ranch through a wedding blog (!) and then continued searching through other blogs with Beltane Ranch as the venue, and I LOVED all the pictures that came out. I sent the pictures to Brian (who at that time still living in WA) and his response was: I have always thought of getting married in a place like this (getting this kind of response from him was a huge, huge green light!!).

Anyway, we visited the place during the Thanksgiving weekend. We absolutely loved it. There was a sense of warmth when you are at this place, like being in a place familiar to you or being at home. I like the fact that the venue was authentic, old/vintage (it is not sparkling new or fancy). I love the lights, the openness, the colors of the flowers.

What kind of music did you play?

We had a solo guitarist (playing the Spanish guitar). He played “Somewhere in Time” (as a little girl I loved this love story – did you ever watch the movie?). For my entrance, I asked the musician to sing “Somewhere over the Rainbow” — Brudda Iz’ version. I knew that if I played anything else, I would have just cried, and I did not want to cry for the ceremony (LOL!) so I wanted light, happy music and he played it so beautifully!!

After the ceremony, when we and the bridal party left the “altar” he sang “Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles.

For the cocktail and dinner reception, we had pop Latin music.

What was your favorite part of the day?

Walking down the aisle with both my parents who both had big smiles on their face. Watching Brian smile as I walked down the aisle. And also, during dancing, our band re-sang “Somewhere over the Rainbow” so that we could have our last dance of that night.

Any advice for other brides?

I did a lot of research on wedding blogs to get inspiration. I think I also listened to what I wanted and just followed my heart. Some decisions may have turned out to be not what I expected and it was just okay, but most of the things were super special, and those are what I remember the most now.

For example, music choice (hiring the Latin band) was really a risky choice, because I was afraid that most guests could not relate to these music, but my whole life I had loved the Gypsy Kings and wanted a Latin touch to the wedding. It was the BEST decision I made! Everyone danced, even our parents and grandparents!!!!

{Real Weddings} Jess & Zach’s Sweet Minnesota Matrimony

Jess and Zach’s super sweet Minnesota wedding just epitomizes everything a wedding should be… so simple, so beautiful… and two people so clearly in love.  Personal touches were everywhere, with homemade food, gorgeous old books, and wildflowers and hydrangeas everywhere… this wedding was not only affordable, but unbelievably beautiful.

Their oh so talented photographer really hits it on the head when she says, “it goes to show how the right venue & simplicity can go a long way.”

I couldn’t agree more.

{Real Weddings} Erin & Graham’s Natural Love

Oh my gosh I am so excited to share today’s gorgeous wedding with you all.  There are so many adorable elements in this Osoyoos, BC affair, submitted via Two Bright Lights.

Old logs, feathers, candy… pie!!  (you know my serious love of pie)

And I just love all the things the couple did themselves.  Just wait until your see the unbelievable job Erin did DIYing her own bouquets!  Such an inspiration.  The couple’s love of all things natural, vintage, and so so pretty is showcased so well by the amazing work of their photographer,  Element Photography.

From the photographer:

Erin + Graham tied the knot on undoubtedly the hottest day of the summer! Their beautiful day started at Erin’s parents home where the girls gathered to dress and put on the final touches. Her parents’ home is charming and decorated with vintage treasures in every nook and cranny! Erin looked smashing in her ruffled gown and was oh so excited to get started with the day. But not as excited as Graham who showed up 30 min early for the first look… ooops! Erin walked down the driveway to meet her man and could hardly hold in the giggles as she snuck up on him. Sweet! Both of them smiling from ear to ear and exchanging compliments we snapped away as they enjoyed a very emotional moment together before their big day! Their wedding day was everything they could have asked for. The setting for the wedding ceremony was the Chobotar ranch in Osoyoos, BC. The warm, warm summer sun shone down on Erin + Graham as they exchanged vows and everyone cheered them on as they walked down the aisle as husband and wife. Erin is a creative, a planner and a tad bit OCD (she claims!). Her venue decorating was meticulous and she nailed every last detail. Most importantly the concept of the design reflected the couple, their relationship and their favorite things. Working with a tight budget Erin was resourceful and drew on their love of the outdoors and its natural beauty to decorate. Moss, old logs, stones, pinecones, feathers, wooden flowers – she even hand crafted the bouquets and boutonnieres herself! Right down to the antlers on the table – which doubled as noise makers to get the newlyweds to kiss – a shout out to their love of hunting. All the vintage finds were from her home decor or her mom’s, perfect!

{Real Weddings} Shirley & Perrin’s Fun Family Affair

Oh I love this wedding!  It is so casual and beautiful at the same time, and everyone is involved… even that super adorbs mr. dog down there!

There was definitely a time in my life when I would have said hands off to the (ahem) vertically challenged lot… but I think I’ve evolved past that point.  While I still wouldn’t say no to an amazing babysitter to keep the little ones entertained… weddings are really about family.  Why else are you going to all the trouble of having such a big party, if not to show your family how much you love and care about them?  That you want them to be a part of your special day.  Chances are, there are a couple of little ones out there that you love and care about too?

… I promise their moms will be super reasonable and make sure they don’t spill grape juice on your dress (right?).

{Real Weddings} Matt & Nicole’s Malibu Ranch Wedding

Happy Monday!  I hope everyone had a good weekend… I have a super fun wedding for you all this morning.  Not only did this couple have a gorgeous outdoor location and tons of cute details, I love how they took their photo booth to a whole new level with super cute costumes and masks… this looks like it was one great party!

From their photographer

There are a lot of things that I love about Matt and Nicole’s wedding. The outdoor ceremony was set against a lush green backdrop of trees and shrubbery; just perfect for them to profess their love and promises to each other. I love the use of DIY decor giving their wedding a more personal and charming touch. Their dessert station also boasted of various tempting treats. While she looked stunning in her Vera Wang gown, it was her exuberance that completed the look. It was indeed her day!

Thanks Carla!!

{Real Weddings} Ashton & Michael’s Gorgeous Fall Fête

I am so excited to share today’s real wedding with you all… it doesn’t get much more up my alley.

The venue was personal, the decor was personal, the theme was personal… every little piece of this wedding represented who Ashton and Michael are as a couple (scroll down to the bottom for an awesome explanation from their photographers).  This is the way it should be.

… and it’s gorgeous to boot!  Just look at those flowers.

Oh, and by the way, this wedding was shot by the amazing husband and wife photography team, Scarlett & Stephen… if you think Ashton and Michael are cute, just take a look at them.  Here’s what Stephen had to say about this wedding…

From the first meeting I had with Ashton, she pulled out her wedding planning book (note to self, I still need to get one of those!) and showed me all the details she was putting together for her in-nature-themed wedding. Ashton and Michael love camping together and Michael even proposed on a camping trip, so the theme they wanted for their wedding was pulling in all things nature. Also, they chose to have their wedding at Stephen Foster State Park because Michael’s grandfather helped build the Florida Trail that goes from the top to bottom of Florida and runs through the Stephen Foster park too. The park also had a gorgeous old Southern plantation mansion in the middle of it that is now turned into a museum. I loved how organic this wedding was with burlap table details, spanish moss, and even the wedding cakes representing tree trunks. Also, for the altar, Ashton used her great-grandmother’s old lace drapes that her grandmother stitched together to bring some family history into the ceremony.

{Real Weddings} Briean & Casey’s Hurricane Party

Remember that little hurricane we had here in DC? And how I joked about having a hurricane party? Well Briean and Casey really did! And along the way they managed to prove just how amazing your wedding can be when you roll with whatever the day may bring.

The couple were unlucky in weather, but they and their amazing photographer, Lisa Boggs, embraced the day and ended up with something so special I almost find myself wishing for rain!

Lisa was sweet enough to share a few words about the day. I just love that she was so on board for anything. Briean and Casey were lucky to have such an awesome photographer:

I remember the leadup to Hurricane Irene here in DC. Every concert was cancelled, there were long lines for sandbags… was it hard to make the decision to go forward?

For me, it wasn’t a difficult decision. I had already done a walk-through with Briean (the bride) at National Harbor the week prior to the hurricane craziness, and we had actually scoped out some indoor locations that I thought would make for great photographs even if it was sunny outside. I was really confident leading up to the wedding even though I knew a hurricane was now going to be part of the picture! Don’t get me wrong, part of me was definitely nervous because I had never photographed in those kind of conditions, but at the same time, it was something new and exciting that I liked. The only way I would not have photographed this wedding is if National Harbor had called it off, thus having Briean and Casey call it off.

What technical issues did you run into while shooting in a hurricane, and how did you overcome them?

Other than rain getting on my lens and manipulating some of the photos, I really didn’t run into technical issues! My husband, Mike (my second shooter), was my designated umbrella-holder for the outdoor shots. He was also the napkin-retriever for when we had to wipe all the equipment down. Luckily, we dried everything off immediately after the outdoor photographs and everything worked perfectly for the rest of the night!

What else did the storm throw off in your usual workflow? Any fun surprises?

The one photograph I had planned prior to the wedding day was a shot of Briean and Casey out on the Sunset Room deck overlooking the harbor. At 9:30 pm on Saturdays during the summer, the Gaylord National Harbor has a firework show, and I knew I wanted to get a really stunning photo of the two of them in front of that scene. Well, obviously the firework show was cancelled that night and it sort of crushed my dream of that photo. However, throughout the reception that night, I was noticing how cool the rain on the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Sunset Room looked. Especially with the lights coming in from other buildings, the beading of that rain just looked really cool. It was right then that my new concept for their night shot was born! So, doing exactly what I was going to do for their firework shot, I set them up in front of a window and fired away. I honestly could not be more happy with the way that photo turned out. It was definitely my favorite surprise of the evening, and I really think I like it more than what I had in my head for the firework photo! It doesn’t get any better than that!

Would you change a thing?

Absolutely not. I can’t emphasize enough how fun this wedding was, even in a hurricane. Briean, Casey, their family and friends all had the most upbeat attitude about the entire occasion. Everyone pulled together to make this wedding the most beautiful, memorable occasion ever, and I can’t thank them enough for having me be a part of it!

This whole wedding just goes to show that this is one of the most amazing days of your life, and it will stay that way no matter what obstacles might arise… so enjoy it to the fullest! And maybe in the end you’ll even come to appreciate those obstacles.

Thanks Lisa for sharing these amazing shots!

Glen Echo Park

Here’s another fun venue to add to the east coast list.  I used to live right down the street from Glen Echo Park, so I just love all the weddings I’ve seen there in the past couple of days.

First, this particularly cute one appeared on Style Me Pretty yesterday and while I love every little detail, I think my favorite part is just how happy this couple looks.

Look at them… how cute are they?!

Then, while I was still reeling from all the cuteness, Bree at Capitol Romance posted this today!  Another super happy, adorable, quirky couple… I love this location for a DC area wedding!

Quiet Sundays

“All that I am, or hope to be…”
~ Abraham Lincoln

I just love the moment captured in this photo of the mother of the bride.

It is a quiet Sunday around here.  Mark is working and the weather is not the best.  Lennon is very concerned.  I’m taking the time to get through a few chores and make some tasty (I hope) rice pudding.
