Peppermint Pistachio Bark

The holidays are here, and to me that means cookies and candy. (Okay every occasion means cookies and candy… but did you see that it was National Cookie Day yesterday?)

So yesterday I shared a post on Coco/Mingo about just that, with a little recipe to add to your holiday swap (do you do a cookie swap?) or, if you like, just eat up all by yourself.

… you already know that’s what we did. This season is dangerous.

Check the post out here, along with all of the gorgeousness that is Jessica’s blog.

And thank you thank you thank you to everyone for entering yesterday, and for all of your kind words. I’m so excited that I was able to introduce a few of you to a great new brand, and I love hearing all about your plans for the photo books!

If you didn’t have a chance to enter, don’t worry. All of our 24 Merry Days Giveaways last for a whole week. (So that means right now you can still enter days 1-5… just sayin’.)

24 Merry Days // Giveaway Day Five

We’ve talked about my house, right? How it’s kind of stuck in this constant state of decorating disrepair?

So let me tell you, today’s giveaway speaks straight to me — what I wouldn’t give to have a whole gallery wall of prints in one fell swoop.

In fact you might want to hurry over to Making it Lovely now, before I find a way to fix day five (okay or all of the days… are you loving this so far?!)

Giving Tuesday // Giving a Lenovo Tablet to Frederick Reads

giving tuesday / a thousand threads
It seems like every day after Thanksgiving has a shopping designation these days… Black Friday, Cyber Monday… it can be a little overwhelming. But Giving Tuesday is one day I think I can get behind. It’s a day that encourages us all to give a little back, and this year I’m excited to say that I had the opportunity to give something pretty big.

Courtesy of Lenovo, I was able to donate a brand new Yoga Tablet to one of my favorite local charities.

Frederick Reads is a partnership between Frederick County Public Libraries and dozens of local organizations to build literacy and foster a love of reading. They hold readings and other events throughout the year, which require a ton of organizing by their lovely chair, Elizabeth Cromwell.

Elizabeth is hard at work prepping for next season’s events, and has already shared a ton of ways she might be able to use the tablet… to research upcoming guests, promote events, and even produce the presentations that accompany speakers on stage.

The tablet is super light, with a little kickstand that makes it easy to set up for movies, or to attach a keyboard to and type… so I know it will come in handy in a lot of ways. I know I’ve gotten a ton of use out of my own.

Thanks Lenovo for making this happen. We all love a good shopping day, but there’s nothing quite like the feeling of giving back.

Have you thought about joining in on Giving Tuesday? Click here to read more about the day. It’s all about giving back, but that doesn’t have to mean money or things… it’s a great day to go out and volunteer too!

24 Merry Days // Giveaway Day Three

I’ve been coveting today’s giveaway myself for ages. Public makes the cutest and coolest little city bikes I think I’ve ever seen.

Now, if you took a look in my garage you’d probably say that Mark and I don’t need another bike (at something like 3 or 4 apiece… a gal needs a bike for every occasion, right?) but we’re firm believers that when it comes to bikes, there’s no such thing as too many.

Especially adorable single-speed city bikes. So even if you already have one you love, run on over to The House That Lars Built and enter now! And be sure to check back here tomorrow — because I’m up next!

And I can’t wait to reveal what I have to give away!

Thanksgiving in New York

thanksgiving in new york / a thousand threadsthanksgiving in new york / a thousand threads
There is something so absurd about the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade… the giant balloons, the cold, Richard Simmons riding a turtle…

And yet, it’s the absurdity that makes it all fun. I have to admit I was skeptical going in. I’m not a big fan of crowds… or the cold… or well, to be honest I kind of hate parades. Put all three together and you’re looking at my personal idea of hell. So waking up early to traipse out into the cold and the wind, just to stand for three hours and wait for a parade… no thank you. I’ll see everyone at dinner.

BUT — when you have a seven-year-old, and you really hope that it might be one of the most magical days of his little life, all of a sudden, even if you hate it all, it’s kind of hard to miss…

24 Merry Days // Giveaway Day Two

Happy Monday! It’s day two of 24 Merry Days, and today we have something really exciting (okay let’s just be honest, I’m going to be saying that a lot).

But really, I’d pretty much die for a $250 shopping spree at Anthro… in fact with that much free cash, I’m not even sure I’d know where to start.

Then again

24 Merry Days

20131127-100745.jpg20131127-091645.jpg
Well all, we’re in the car and on our way. We’ll be watching the (balloon-less? keep your fingers crossed for us) Macy’s parade tomorrow and enjoying the rest of the week in New York. But before I go away for the weekend, I have some exciting news!

This year I’m proud to be joining 23 incredible ladies to count down to Christmas with a giveaway each and every day.

… and these giveaways are no joke, you guys. We have a bike from Public Bikes, a pair of shoes from Swedish Hasbeens, gift cards to Anthropologie, West Elm, and The Land of Nod, and so so so much more.

I’m dying to let you know what I’ll be giving away! But it’s a surprise… so you’ll just have to come back to see.

And all 24 of us will be keeping up with the giveaways so that you don’t miss a single one. Check back here or visit the gorgeous website that Gloria designed especially for 24 Merry Days every day, starting on December 1st, for your chance to win.

And with that, I’m off to New York. Keep up with our trip over on Instagram, and I’ll see you all back here on the 1st!

Malted Chocolate Pecan Pie

malted chocolate pecan pie / a thousand threads
Last week I ordered a pie book that I expected to love, but not quite so much as I did. Pie, much like Thanksgiving turkey, is something that we tend to develop our own ideas about, and once we’ve got them in our head, it’s hard to get them out.

When it comes to food, I’m as stubborn as they come. I’m convinced that a turkey is better brined and basted – even if Alton Brown says I shouldn’t baste. And I’m convinced that my all-butter piecrust is the best thing on earth.

But my own opinions don’t really mean anything to anyone but me. Others could think my pie is the worst. (I hope you don’t — because come spring, Mark and I might have a little bit of an announcement… we’ve been foreshadowing here for some time, but behind the scenes we’re plugging away, and some exciting things are happening — but you might.)

Because of that, I’m always curious to join in the piecrust debate, and to take a peek into others’ kitchens to see what they love.

So when The Four & Twenty Blackbirds Pie Book showed up at my door, I turned straight to the crust. Was it the same? Similar? Something totally new?
