Winter wonder

// a thousand threads

There’s something about the holidays, that little kid in me still gets antsy about the wait. I know it’s just a few more days, but I’m so ready.

… ready for winter, ready for Santa, ready for eggnog and Christmas Vacation and a big fat bowl of clam chowder.

Any big Christmassy plans on the way?

P.S. Speaking of the wait… be sure to stop by tomorrow, because guess who’s up next in our 24 Merry Days of giveaways?! Have you been keeping up?

That’s okay if you haven’t… more chances for me to win that Smeg fridge.

Setting a simple holiday table

a simple holiday table // a thousand threads
It’s not always easy to see when we’re young, but once we’ve grown up, we begin to trace the pieces of ourselves back to our parents… my love for holiday traditions, of course, has everything to do with my family. But so does my love for setting a holiday table.

My mom has always been a brilliant entertainer, and as a child, though I loved to spend time in the kitchen, I remember laughing at her huge collection of dishes… thinking there must be better things out there to stockpile.

Today I have my own growing pile… one that’s taken over cabinets, shelves, closets… and one that’s still far from where I’d like it to be.

So this weekend, with a little help from the gorgeous piles of wholesale flowers sent my way by the folks at Fiftyflowers.com, I foraged a few holidays greens and set a simple holiday table that I hope my mom would be proud of.

We have so many plans for the coming year… plans for Field + Foundry, plans for Dough Uprising, plans for this blog…

There’s something so special about sitting down to a beautifully placed table… the whole experience grows from there. And there’s nothing more satisfying than a truly wonderful meal.

We can’t wait to fill this table with piles of food and the generous love of our family and friends.

52 dates // 49

52 dates // a thousand threads
The date // A pit stop at the park.

Sometimes the day doesn’t go according to plan… 5 photo shoots end in a feast,  but one that’s eaten from the bathroom counter as you scramble to clean up quickly enough to make it to the next event, and in running to get it all done, that date you had in mind gets pushed aside…

But then sometimes, if you’re lucky, you happen upon a park. And maybe, if you remember to take the time to stop, you rediscover just how much fun it is to play on the swings…

Running down a dream

link love // a thousand threads
Running, at least. Our quiet winter has turned out to be anything but, but you probably already know by now that we wouldn’t have it any other way…

The only problem is that with all of the fun we’ve been having, Christmas is trying its damndest to pass us by. These two lame-o kids still don’t even have a tree. But we’ll remedy all of that this weekend.

Time to turn on the Christmas tunes, pull out the ornaments and go to town… maybe whip up a few holiday goodies along the way.

Tell me, what do you have on the docket this weekend? Are you as late to the game as we are? Or are you sitting back, blissfully enjoying the cheer all around?

Warby Parker winter try-on

warby winter home try-on // a thousand threads
Picking out new glasses is sort of like getting your hair cut… on one hand, you sort of know what looks good.

But then there was that time when you really thought your new do was killing it, and then someone pointed to the party in the back…

Sometimes you just can’t tell.

That’s why I love Warby Parker so much. You can bring 5 pairs home and settle in… live with them for a while before you buy. And if you’re really crazy like me, you can post pictures on the internet and ask your friends for an early critique…

Recently I had the opportunity to partner up with the Warby team on another home try-on, and I’ve been so excited to ask all of you… what do you think?

Is there one pair you like best?

… any mullets in the crowd?

You know there’s no way I could pick them myself.

Maple glazed shrimp and cream cheese grits

maple glazed shrimp and cream cheese grits // a thousand threads
I can’t say just how the tradition began. But every year at Christmas, my family would gather twice. First on Christmas Eve for shrimp louie and clam chowder, and second on Christmas Day for a Thanksgiving-like feast.

My heart swells to ten times its size at just the thought of my grandparents’ home in those days… warm, inviting, and filled with the scent of freshly-baked pie, with appetizers at the ready and grandpa at the counter mixing singapore slings.

Sure, none of our traditions made sense and sure, on more than one occasion that epic meal was followed by an equally-epic storming out of one relative or another, egged on by my grandfather, left giggling in the corner, so tickled by his own tomfoolery…

“What?!” would be his response to any question or comment directed his way. With a wink in my or my father’s direction a split second later…

He played deaf for years before anyone ever caught on — and by then he really was.

The date // A pizza picnic and a movie.

I’m pretty sure we’re past the point of outing ourselves as the homebodies that we are, but lately the weather has been particularly conducive to warm cozy blankets and nights on the couch. So this week we went with it…

What can I say, some days a girl just wants to stay home with a big bottle of wine and a meatball pizza on the floor.

Challah with fresh garlic herb butter

challah // a thousand threads
It’s possible that bread might just be the most evil of all drugs — it’s certainly the one I can’t do without.

How fitting, then, that I married this bread-baking man, who’s recently added the dreamy goodness that is challah to the litany of good smells that fill our home.

Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and probably one of the simplest of his bread recipes to conquer… I’m pretty sure I could live on just fresh challah if given the chance. Maybe a little bit of herb butter. Which is why we just had to share the recipes here…

Well that and it was a really good excuse to ask him to make me a loaf or five.
