The date // Breakfast at The Fritch.

The Barbara Fritchie is a once-great Frederick institution that hasn’t changed in at least 50 years.

The charm of the era it was born in still remains (… along with more than a few of the original clientele) even if it is a little rough around the edges. And it’s become one of our favorite places for a simple breakfast, a cup of coffee, and maybe even a piece of pie.

So this week, with a full schedule on our plates, we decided to wake up extra early and sneak away to our favorite little Frederick diner… still just as great as ever, just maybe in a slightly different way.

taco and pisco night // a thousand threads
The date // Tacos and pisco on a Tuesday night.

If there’s anything we’re out to prove (to ourselves as much as anyone else) with this little series, it’s that not every date has to be a big deal… some weeks just don’t let that happen. Some weeks there’s a market, an event to prep for, a pile of chores, and an even bigger pile of work.

… but at the end of the day, I can’t think of anything I want to do more than to come home and sit down with my guy to one of our favorite dinners and drinks… just us, late at night, eating tacos over the stove and laughing because they never seem to make it any farther than that… mixing pisco sours and feeling nostalgic about our time in Peru.

That, for all the dates and all the places in the world, is my happy place… it doesn’t have to be fancy to be perfect.

52 dates + bespoke global // a thousand threads
The date // A picnic and a paddle on the lake.

One of our favorite things to do any time of the year, but especially in the fall when the weather is just right, is to take our canoe out on the lake. So this weekend we teamed up with Bespoke Global to do it in style.

Their pretty paddles helped us glide around on one of the most beautiful fall days we’ve had yet… with barely a whisper of wind to slow us down.

After, we found ourselves a tree to rest under and enjoyed a little picnic — rounding out our busy weekend with some time to just sit back and breathe.

The date // Dinner at Toki Underground.

Every time we go to New York, we talk about trying Totto Ramen. And every time, we wimp out… the line is just. so. long.

But we have to get our ramen fix somehow… so last night Mark met me after work (flowers in hand) and we wandered down to H Street for some fried chicken steam buns and kimchi ramen.

The night was rainy and we were in need of a little lazy break after a big week of Field + Foundry work, so the warm soup hit the spot.

… and the miso chocolate chip cookies didn’t hurt either.

The date // Home sweet home and a drive through the hills.

I remember being a kid and going for drives with my parents, confused as to why anyone would want to wander around aimlessly like that. Now that I’m older, I understand the urge.

This weekend, between nursing a cold and prepping for our next Field + Foundry event, Mark and I were ready for a little bit of down time. So we decided to go for a drive through the Catoctin Mountains… stopping whenever it struck our fancy.

We dreamed dreams of the future and made plans to make them come true, and enjoyed just being back in our beautiful neck of the woods. It’s amazing to have the chance to travel, but there’s nothing like coming home.

The very best Portland sweets from Endlessly Enraptured

the very best Portland sweets // endlessly enraptured for a thousand threads
If you happen to read Endlessly Enraptured or follow my Instagram feed, then you know my husband and I have a passion for sweets. I wanted to take a bit of time today to share a few of our favorite places in Portland to get your sugar fix.

Bakeshop (above) is a special place run by special people. We can never pass up their delicate hand pies or nutella puffs. Oh, and if you happen to be in the mood for something savory, I highly recommend their ham and cheese croissant. They make the best I’ve ever had.

52 dates // 33

52 dates // a thousand threads
The date // A trip to the driving range.

I always love those stories where they ask successful people about their summer jobs. The answers are all over the place — giant chickens, corn shuckers, roller-skating sperm.

Once upon a time, in a land far from here, I spent my summers as a caddy. Trudging along in the warm summer sun, carrying bags as big as myself, watching Happy Gilmore at least a thousand times while I waited around in the caddyshack (also Caddyshack).

It was a really well-paying job for a high school kid, and how can you complain when your work involves spending the whole summer outside?

The only problem is that after just a few summers spent caddying, I will be forever cursed with a completely terrible, awful, inability to play love of golf. Luckily, Mark is also terrible loves it too, so we try to get out and golf as much as we can to try to improve our awful game because we love it so much.

So this weekend we pulled out our dusty clubs, dusted off our creaky, lazy shoulders, and even managed to hit one or two balls where we meant to.

Do you play? And did you have a summer job as a kid? I’d love to hear all about it!

52 dates // a thousand threads
The date // A walk around downtown Frederick.
The treat // A stop at Frederick Coffee Co. before heading home.

After a long day of baking, staring longingly at the gorgeous summer sun, this Saturday we were searching for any way to get outside, and a walk around Frederick seemed like the perfect excuse to indulge our exhaustion with a little caffeine.

We wandered around downtown (which is — and I say this with no bias at all — the best place ever), past the shops and along the canal, and then settled into a nook at Frederick Coffee Co. that I easily could’ve stayed in all night.

These days, Saturday evenings are for nothing if not a little time to relax, and this was the perfect evening, the perfect place, and the perfect company to do just that.

52 dates // picnic at home // a thousand threads
The date // A picnic at home.
The picnic // Bread, cheese, pickles, heirloom tomatoes, and other assorted goodness from the fridge.

Since we don’t really know how to take a weekend easy, no matter how we try, this weekend was much like the rest. Baking pies, shooting an engagement session for some of our best friends, selling pies, cleaning up our mess, and then crashing completely.

So this Sunday, since (see aforementioned crashing…) we felt like staying in, and the dark clouds outside seemed to be cheering us on, we decided to stake out a lazy little picnic on the floor.

We gathered up bits and pieces here and there, some leftovers, some just waiting for the right time to be eaten, and put together quite a little feast if I do say so myself, complete with a delicious bottle of wine we picked up while scouting the best local vineyards for Field + Foundry.

Maybe it’s obvious, but our favorite dates are always the ones we have at home, when it’s just us, a cozy blanket, a bottle of wine, and some time to catch up on everything we haven’t had the chance to say in the middle of such a long, busy week.

(And of course, a sneaky puppy waiting in the wings, hoping we might take pity and throw a piece of cheese his way…).
