Giving Tuesday // Giving a Lenovo Tablet to Frederick Reads

giving tuesday / a thousand threads
It seems like every day after Thanksgiving has a shopping designation these days… Black Friday, Cyber Monday… it can be a little overwhelming. But Giving Tuesday is one day I think I can get behind. It’s a day that encourages us all to give a little back, and this year I’m excited to say that I had the opportunity to give something pretty big.

Courtesy of Lenovo, I was able to donate a brand new Yoga Tablet to one of my favorite local charities.

Frederick Reads is a partnership between Frederick County Public Libraries and dozens of local organizations to build literacy and foster a love of reading. They hold readings and other events throughout the year, which require a ton of organizing by their lovely chair, Elizabeth Cromwell.

Elizabeth is hard at work prepping for next season’s events, and has already shared a ton of ways she might be able to use the tablet… to research upcoming guests, promote events, and even produce the presentations that accompany speakers on stage.

The tablet is super light, with a little kickstand that makes it easy to set up for movies, or to attach a keyboard to and type… so I know it will come in handy in a lot of ways. I know I’ve gotten a ton of use out of my own.

Thanks Lenovo for making this happen. We all love a good shopping day, but there’s nothing quite like the feeling of giving back.

Have you thought about joining in on Giving Tuesday? Click here to read more about the day. It’s all about giving back, but that doesn’t have to mean money or things… it’s a great day to go out and volunteer too!

24 Merry Days // Giveaway Day Three

I’ve been coveting today’s giveaway myself for ages. Public makes the cutest and coolest little city bikes I think I’ve ever seen.

Now, if you took a look in my garage you’d probably say that Mark and I don’t need another bike (at something like 3 or 4 apiece… a gal needs a bike for every occasion, right?) but we’re firm believers that when it comes to bikes, there’s no such thing as too many.

Especially adorable single-speed city bikes. So even if you already have one you love, run on over to The House That Lars Built and enter now! And be sure to check back here tomorrow — because I’m up next!

And I can’t wait to reveal what I have to give away!

Thanksgiving in New York

thanksgiving in new york / a thousand threadsthanksgiving in new york / a thousand threads
There is something so absurd about the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade… the giant balloons, the cold, Richard Simmons riding a turtle…

And yet, it’s the absurdity that makes it all fun. I have to admit I was skeptical going in. I’m not a big fan of crowds… or the cold… or well, to be honest I kind of hate parades. Put all three together and you’re looking at my personal idea of hell. So waking up early to traipse out into the cold and the wind, just to stand for three hours and wait for a parade… no thank you. I’ll see everyone at dinner.

BUT — when you have a seven-year-old, and you really hope that it might be one of the most magical days of his little life, all of a sudden, even if you hate it all, it’s kind of hard to miss…

24 Merry Days // Giveaway Day Two

Happy Monday! It’s day two of 24 Merry Days, and today we have something really exciting (okay let’s just be honest, I’m going to be saying that a lot).

But really, I’d pretty much die for a $250 shopping spree at Anthro… in fact with that much free cash, I’m not even sure I’d know where to start.

Then again

24 merry days / lovely indeed

Last Chance

thanksgiving edition link love / a thousand threads
This weekend we’re back to our painting, working to get it all done before we’re off to New York.

It’s also possible that I might be making it a priority to catch the new Hunger Games before we go.

… is it wrong to admit just how cheeseball excited I am? (Are you too?)

It’s hard to believe that Thanksgiving is less than a week away. Any plans for this last big weekend before the holidays really kick off?

(After all… Black Friday is just around the corner.

… do you go to the stores?)

Eye this gorgeous holiday table.

Buy the perfect holiday apron.

Make a pretty fall garland.

Bake a maple pumpkin pie.

I wouldn’t usually be so big on a commercial, but did you see this Google India ad? It made me cry.

All of the things.

When do you put up your Christmas tree?

Have I mentioned how much I love having a tree in the house? The smell, the sight, the constant reminder that Christmas is almost here. I love it so much that as soon as Thanksgiving is gone, I’m chomping at the bit to get one up… and I’d happily leave it until well after the new year if I could.

What about you? Do you jump to put up a tree? Or do you usually wait until you’re a little bit closer to the big day?

Edible Gifts // White Chocolate Cranberry Biscotti

white chocolate cranberry biscotti / a thousand threads
When it comes to holiday hostess gifts, you really can’t go wrong with biscotti.

Add some good coffee beans to the mix and I don’t know about you, but you’ve definitely made my day.

… and with chewy red cranberries and creamy white chocolate, this particular recipe fits the occasion just right!

What are some of your favorite holiday hostess gifts to give? I always love to give food, but we fall back on wine a lot too.
