{Real Weddings} Anita & Zachary’s Vintage Romance

There’s a time when a man needs to fight and a time when he needs to accept that his destiny’s lost, the ship has sailed and that only a fool will continue. The truth is I’ve always been a fool.”

Did you ever see Big Fish?

It’s one of my favorite movies ever, and particularly meaningful to Mark and I.

If you haven’t seen it, do it now.  I’m serious.  It might just change your life.

If you have, I promise I really do have a point… you know when Edward goes to Spectre (the first time?) and it’s so perfect.  The shoes are hung on the power line, everyone is all smiles, and the lights in the middle of the town just sparkle like crazy?  That is what Anita and Zachary’s wedding reminds me of.

A simpler, more beautiful time.

It stole my heart.

Here’s what their photographer had to say:

Anita and Zach had an outdoor wedding at the family pond, which has long been a location for family picnic’s and get-together’s. They managed to transform the pond from an everyday picnic location into a magical outdoor reception site, complete with candles hanging from willow trees and fireworks to finish off the night. While planning a wedding from out-of-state, Anita was sure to include special details that focused on their relationship as well as their families. Most of the details were either created by Anita herself, or by friends and family members, keeping the wedding as Do-It-Yourself as possible, while still being elegant and enchanting.

{Wedding Film Wednesday}

Today’s wedding film is really special, because it was shot entirely by a friend of the bride and groom… and not a friend who also happens to be a professional videographer. A friend with nothing more than an iPhone and some seriously awesome editing skills.

Brooke, who was also a bridesmaid, was there for every second of the wedding action from the leadup to the day of, so she was able to capture moments that a regular videographer could only dream of.

The result? Amazing. To say the least…

Untitled from Brooke Hoehne on Vimeo.

The film was originally posted on Grey Likes Weddings… and it has stayed with me since. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

The song in the video is “Same Heart” by The Bonfires.

Love // Nikki & Benjamin

Okay, yesterday, I swear to you, every single thing I read or watched just hit me straight to the bone… something was in the air.

One of those things was this oh so true post by Jonas Peterson…

If you read magazines and wedding blogs today, you’d think it’s all about the dress, the decorations, invitations or a million other things.

THINGS.

It’s not.

It’s about celebrating love, a manifestation of commitment, a gathering of friends and family.

Because you’re in love.

{Real Weddings} Matt & Nicole’s Malibu Ranch Wedding

Happy Monday!  I hope everyone had a good weekend… I have a super fun wedding for you all this morning.  Not only did this couple have a gorgeous outdoor location and tons of cute details, I love how they took their photo booth to a whole new level with super cute costumes and masks… this looks like it was one great party!

From their photographer

There are a lot of things that I love about Matt and Nicole’s wedding. The outdoor ceremony was set against a lush green backdrop of trees and shrubbery; just perfect for them to profess their love and promises to each other. I love the use of DIY decor giving their wedding a more personal and charming touch. Their dessert station also boasted of various tempting treats. While she looked stunning in her Vera Wang gown, it was her exuberance that completed the look. It was indeed her day!

Thanks Carla!!

{Real Weddings} Ashton & Michael’s Gorgeous Fall Fête

I am so excited to share today’s real wedding with you all… it doesn’t get much more up my alley.

The venue was personal, the decor was personal, the theme was personal… every little piece of this wedding represented who Ashton and Michael are as a couple (scroll down to the bottom for an awesome explanation from their photographers).  This is the way it should be.

… and it’s gorgeous to boot!  Just look at those flowers.

Oh, and by the way, this wedding was shot by the amazing husband and wife photography team, Scarlett & Stephen… if you think Ashton and Michael are cute, just take a look at them.  Here’s what Stephen had to say about this wedding…

From the first meeting I had with Ashton, she pulled out her wedding planning book (note to self, I still need to get one of those!) and showed me all the details she was putting together for her in-nature-themed wedding. Ashton and Michael love camping together and Michael even proposed on a camping trip, so the theme they wanted for their wedding was pulling in all things nature. Also, they chose to have their wedding at Stephen Foster State Park because Michael’s grandfather helped build the Florida Trail that goes from the top to bottom of Florida and runs through the Stephen Foster park too. The park also had a gorgeous old Southern plantation mansion in the middle of it that is now turned into a museum. I loved how organic this wedding was with burlap table details, spanish moss, and even the wedding cakes representing tree trunks. Also, for the altar, Ashton used her great-grandmother’s old lace drapes that her grandmother stitched together to bring some family history into the ceremony.

Baby’s Breath

Baby’s Breath Poms / Chair Decor / Bouquet / Bouquet and Books / Burlap Cone

With a little help from my flower-savvy aunt, I think we’ve decided to DIY our flowers… so I’m on a mission to gather as much information and as many ideas as I can, and one thing I’m really loving is baby’s breath.

DIYing our flowers makes a lot of sense.  Mark and I spend a lot of time outdoors and I tend to be a little crunchy as it is, so it really wouldn’t be right for us to have anything that looks too manufactured… we want a natural look, and I think that’s something we can get on our own.

Of course, there are a million amazing florists who could also get that look for us.  What we’re really talking about here is money, and in my opinion, flowers are a great place to find savings.  If you’re like us and want a really natural look, not only can you probably get that look on your own, your flowers will be that much more personal because you did them yourself.  DIY projects can be really rewarding that way.

(… and speaking of money, baby’s breath is super cheap.)

Ultimately, I’d like to add some color in as well.  Mark would like to incorporate snapdragons and I love sweet peas.  I would also like for our flowers to be as local and in season as possible (and I have no idea if that applies to either snapdragons or sweet peas… or baby’s breath ack!).

Lots to learn!  But I really do like those big masses of baby’s breath.

DIY CD Cover

It was my dad’s birthday recently, and (since we’re planning a wedding and all) we’re a little short on money… but not at all short on time or love! So I decided to DIY my music-obsessed father a mixed tape… er, CD. Mark found these really great CDs that look just like an old 45 and I couldn’t have been more excited to use them!

Then I took a little trip to the craft store and picked a few things out for the cover. It might not be quite as rock ‘n’ roll as my father (that’s him below) but I still think it’s pretty cool.

This would make a great favor… in fact I think something similar might make an appearance in my guest totes. Click through for the full DIY.

Handmade Favors

Grits for Two

It’s the little details that always get me.  You can really tell that a couple poured their hearts into their wedding when the little details seem to represent who they are.

These days, many of us (Mark and I included) have developed an entire life together before we ever say, “I do,” so it is particularly special to be able to share a little piece of what might normally only be ours, on our wedding day.  One great way to do that is through favors.  Maybe you love to garden, or can your own vegetables… maybe you have an amazing collection of family recipes between the two of you that you want to share… maybe you just love jam.  Whatever it is, there is something so special about a handmade favor.

Limoncello / Rosemary Salt and Clementine Sugar / DIY Succulents

I’ve decided to leave my favor decision to the very end… feeling like it’s sort of the “icing on the cake” (bad, sorry) of what I hope will be a great wedding, but there are so many ideas out there… I’m having fun dreaming up what might be the perfect little gift for our guests!

DIY Soaps / Recipe Favors

I want to be sure that our choice is a true representation of us… even if that just means it’s likely to be food.  If there is one thing that Mark and I manage to prove every time we’re together… it is that we love to eat.

I’ve really been wanting to get into canning lately, so maybe I’ll stumble upon a great idea there… I’ve also considered these amazing little creations, since marshmallows are pretty much my favorite thing ever… and the same goes for caramel and Mark, but you never know what we might come up with in the end!  I’m trying to remember to pace myself.

… we do still have well over a year.
