Twenty-Nine

birthday cake / a thousand threads
There aren’t nearly enough candles on that cake, but it’s possible that we’ve reached the age where a simple dessert might begin to resemble something far less sweet — forest fires come to mind — so I think I’m cool with just one.

Last year, on my birthday, I listed nine things I’ve learned.  And since here we are, another year around the bend, I thought I’d take this opportunity to add just one more.  Considering it took me 28 whole years to learn those others, I think that should do.

This year, more than any other, I’ve learned that sometimes, in order to be creative and, more importantly, in order to be true to yourself, you have to be okay with the fact that you might repel as many folks as you attract.

run on vacation / a thousand threads
One-Mile Pace: 7:50
Long Run: 9 Miles
Weekly Mileage: 16 Miles

Our long runs are getting longer and we’re starting to count down the days until we leave for this race — but since I’m headed to NYC in just a few days, right now I’m busy working on how I’ll keep up with training once I’m there.  Here are the top five best tips for running on vacation that I’m going to try to remember on my trip to Alt

Slowing Down

The best to eye, to buy, to make, and to bake.
The weekend is so close! And I’m so ready. With the next few days off before Alt, I’m hoping to slow down and spend some time catching up… make a little bit of an effort to relax before everything speeds back up again.

And, of course, I’m looking forward to a fantastic Father’s Day with my guys.

What are you up to this weekend?  Any big plans?

Eye Mike D’s house in Brooklyn, which is basically perfect.

Buy this pretty summer dress.

Make this brilliant IKEA hack — the perfect gold desk.

Bake these totally ridiculous looking peanut butter cup pancakes (that also just happen to be vegan and gluten free).

7 tools to manage your inbox.

The men of Refinery29 take on Prancercise.

This poor spider made me laugh.

An adorable camp-themed wedding.

Okay so — the folks at Bon Appétit officially rock.

I’m already dying over the new VSCO Cam — but I really can’t wait to use VSCO Grid.

Anything rhubarb and cream cheese.

The 3 Best Ways to Get Involved in Alt NYC from Home

the 3 best ways to participate in Alt NYC without going / a thousand threads
I’ve been talking and tweeting and instagramming (can we find a better verb for this guy? gram-am-am-ing awkward word…) more and more about Alt NYC as the date nears, so it goes without saying that I’m pret-ty excited. But I know what it’s like to be on the other side. In fact for two years now I’ve been living vicariously through the lucky ladies who’ve attended Alt SLC, wishing I was there (let’s not pretend that’s ended of course, I still desperately want to make it to SLC).

Over those two years, though, I’ve learned that there are a lot of awesome ways you can participate in – and benefit from – Alt even without being there. And make some pretty great friends along the way.

Here are the three best ways you can get involved from home…

Fresh from the Farm

fresh from the farm / a thousand threadsfresh from the farm / a thousand threadsfresh from the farm / a thousand threadsfresh from the farm / a thousand threads
This, folks, is what I love most about living in a smaller town. Not the farmer’s market itself — those you can find in the city — but the hometown feel of a tiny farmer’s market that takes place just down the road. The kind of market where you linger… swap a recipe or two, learn about a new local farm… the kind that might even feature a small family bluegrass band.

I’m telling you… my little town keeps me sane.

(And as a result of my lingering, I learned about a whole new vegetable! Have you ever cooked with scapes? We did for the first time this weekend and they’re delicious! I can’t wait to share the recipe tomorrow.)

National Doughnut Day

The best to eye, to buy, to make, and to bake.
First of all, are we all aware that today is National Doughnut Day? Because that’s pretty important. If there was ever a day to splurge on a box full of few doughnuts, it’s this one right here (at least that’s what I’m telling myself).

And just in case you’re not sure where to go for your fix (I can hear you scoffing at me now… don’t know where to find a delicious doughnut, ha! As if I’d overlook such important information.) Maryland folks, have you been here? They actually have quite a few locations in the area and the doughnuts are pretty amazing. Although they can’t compare to my faves… but those guys are pretty far away (yet right now, coincidentally, well within the reach of my parents — can you feel me seething with envy?). Then, of course, there’s Voodoo.

Do you have a favorite place for doughnuts?  Of course you do.  Who has the best?

Hope you all have an amazing weekend! East coasters, try to stay dry.

Eye the beautiful and incredibly talented Rylee Hitchner‘s gorgeous wedding on Once Wed, Part I and Part II.

Buy these colorful Clare Nicolson prints, via Notes to a Further Excuse.

Make these awesome crystal cutoffs.

Bake strawberry and citrus cornmeal ice cream sandwiches. (And also, obviously… doughnuts.)

How to be an introvert in an extroverted world.

Do you read before you tweet? Not always? You’re not alone.

Prancercise.

This is old, but hilarious… and highly appropriate for this weekend’s finale. A Game of Thrones drinking game.

How Domino’s succeeds — even though the pizza is terrible.

Cute overload (also this dad is plain awesome).

Is barefoot running best? Not for everyone.

These beautiful pictures of Peru.

This cake just looks so amazing I can barely get a handle on myself.

How to hang wall art.

Our iPhone Life

life lately / a thousand threads
Just a little roundup of shots we’ve snapped along the way. It’s been a busy few months and I can only imagine how much busier it’s about to get (maybe next time we’ll remember to take some shots of ourselves!)

Follow along over here if you’re not already — we have some big things planned for this summer, and instagram always seems to be the first to know.

5 Essential Online Tools for an Organized Life

5 essential online tools for an organized life / a thousand threads
Let’s not pretend I’m organized. I can forget what I’m doing as I’m doing it. I’m all over the place… but I’m also obsessive about wanting to be organized. So I spend a lot of time looking for fancy new tools that might help me get a handle on things. These 5 are my favorites right now.

Feedly // Google Reader is going away (cue the violins). When I heard the news I almost died. Until I found Feedly. The thing is that Google Reader was kind of boring. And the app version was… well, kind of nonexistent. Feedly is fantastic, whether you’re using it on your iPhone, tablet, or desktop. It’s pretty, it streamlines your content, and it helps you get through WAY more blogs than Google Reader ever did (sorry Reader, I love you… but maybe this was a blessing…).

Bloglovin’ is pretty great too (and, of course, you can follow A Thousand Threads on whichever you like best – on Bloglovin’ here and on an RSS reader like Feedly here.)

Things // The best to-do list around. Things allows you to break your list down into bite-size chunks and tackle each one by one. You can put a time limit on tasks and group individual jobs into larger projects.

Hootsuite // I’m sure a lot of you use something like Hootsuite (maybe Tweetdeck?) but the reason I include it here is that it can be an invaluable tool if you use it to schedule your tweets. I don’t know about you, but every time I wander over to Twitter I spend at least an hour gawking at all of the amazing links and catching up on the latest news, the this and that… it’s a swirling vortex of procrastination, the Twitter… so anything that can cut down on my exposure is welcome. Scheduling tweets is a fantastic solution. I can schedule the important stuff, then come over to Twitter myself when I have time to catch up (something I can schedule for myself… remember, working in spurts is actually more productive). Hey by the way, are we friends?

Pocket and/or Evernote // I’ll be honest and say that I’ve only just begun to use Evernote, so I can only speak to the fact that at first glance it looks pretty amazing. But I use Pocket almost every day. Pocket is a great visual bookmarking tool, sort of like a private Pinterest, but it saves your whole article or web page. It’s perfect for those times when you want to come back to a piece later (or for saving those link lists you might share on your site!).

Mindnode // An awesome way to organize your thoughts. Mindnode allows you to use mind mapping to brainstorm. Best of all, it allows you to create a visual alternative to the same old vertical list. The idea is that mind mapping makes it easier to build connections between tasks and hide those tasks that don’t fit in with the problem at hand.

Bonus: iNo // Do you have a hard time saying no? Ya… me too. This little app will take down the who, what, and why, then give you options for how to say no — both the nice, and the not so nice. Too bad it can’t do the talking for you too.

So what do you think? Do you use these? Am I missing any that I need to check out?

Summer-Spring

my favorites to eye, to buy, to make, and to bake
So it’s definitely not official — summer is still three weeks away — but apparently it doesn’t know, and I won’t tell if you won’t.  40 to 60 to suddenly 90 degrees and we all have whiplash, but I’ll take the heat over the cold any day.  I plan to sit myself in a chair by the pool and stay there ’til winter.

How about you? Any big plans for the weekend? ((There really is something so much better about a warm summer weekend… the rest of the year just can’t compare.))

Eye this color block kitchen in Brooklyn.

Buy this amazing copper watering can — I need this guy myself, we’ve been using a water pitcher for years now.

Make this sweet peacock chair.

Bake these cheesy rolls (like cinnamon rolls, but with cheese… what?!).

How to break into professional writing by trying really, really hard.

Sid died for this

100 handmade gifts for dad.

Caramelized banana and peanut butter ice cream.

I would kill to go to this.

The J. Crew catalogue and its power over us all.

Make work a series of sprints for more productivity.

This guy melts my heart.
