A Little Distraction

my favorites this week
Happy Sunday!  I hope you’re having a wonderful day — but if, by any chance, you’re already beginning to dread the start of the week (like me…) maybe I can provide a little distraction…

Eye Carey Mulligan in Vogue.

Buy this pretty feather print.

… also these shoes (I need these shoes).

Make your own sunglasses sleeve.

Bake some warm homemade pita bread.

Twinkies are coming back!

An interview with Monique Lhuillier.

… and while we’re talking about wedding dresses.

I feel this way a lot — also donuts.

Carrie Brownstein’s favorite punk albums of all time.

“The winner of a second raffle gets to play Battleship against retired Admiral Mike Mullen.” What?

The first clip from the new season of Arrested Development.

A Tough Week

friday favorites
It seems odd, with my eyes still glued to the latest news in Boston, to step away and talk about the beautiful weekend ahead… to count so many blessings while so much of the country still grieves.  To be so lucky.

But after this week, that’s all I can think… I’m lucky.  I’ll hug the ones I love a little tighter this weekend, and enjoy the sun a little more, knowing that life is precious and fleeting.  And I’ll try to share some cheery links, because if you feel like me I’m sure you’re looking for a little bit of an escape!

Here are a few of my favorites… I hope you, and the ones you love, are safe.  My heart goes out to those who continue to suffer.

Eye this retro bohemian home in Morocco.

Buy a spotted spring dress.

Make these cute clip-on picnic utensils.

Bake this drop-dead gorgeous coconut tres leches cake.

Also, this cake makes my mouth water… as in I can barely look at it because I’m drooling.

Have you noticed that leading men age, but their love interests, well… don’t?

Amen.

Wait, what? Is this a thing?

What makes us feel good about the work that we do?

Weekend Update

my favorites this week
As much as I know you want more conversation in your life about the weather, I can’t help but mention that today is set to be 70 degrees — finally! Spring is here… and that means we’re spending as much of this weekend outdoors as we possibly can… we may even pull out the barbeque!

I hope you’re all having an amazing Sunday and enjoying just as much of this spring stuff as we are.

Now when do they open the pool?

This week I decided to combine two of my favorite features into one so that my Friday links are sure to always bring you something amazing to eye, to buy, to make, and to bake… plus, of course, all of my other favorites from around the web.

What do you think?  There may always be miles to go before I master it, but Photoshop and I are getting to be better friends every day.

Eye these gorgeous florals and this super enviable space.

Buy these amazing suede shorts I’m crushing on.

Make this DIY art from a salvaged portrait.

Bake this lemon poppy seed layer cake.

Pretty watercolor backgrounds for your computer.

I can’t stop laughing at this site.

This is actually really old, I’m late, but I think it’s important, not just for fashion bloggers, but for all bloggers to read (the comments are pretty interesting too, and some of those are a little newer).

These are beautiful.

Also around the web…

Our weekly news update at The Everygirl.

Two Holidays (And a link of my own!)

Link Love 3-16
Almost St. Patrick’s Day! Do you have any big plans? We’re on our way to celebrate with friends, so I’m looking forward to plenty of Irish whiskey and inexplicably green goodies… although after another of this week’s holidays left me snacking on two different types of pie (pizza and lemon meringue — a girl has to celebrate) I should probably go light on the latter.

In addition to all of the lovely things I’ve been ogling on the web this week, I have to start by sharing a link of my own! Say hello to the newest columnist at The Everygirl. I’m so excited to be contributing to a brand new weekly roundup of the news, CliffsNotes-style — take a look and let me know what you think! And after you do… have a fantastic holiday weekend!! Drink some green beer for me.

Here are a few of my favorites this week…

Marais USA’s new collection, via Matchbook Mag.

Pretty florals from Tinge.

A fishing party from Bash, Please!

Stout cupcakes with chocolate-covered pretzels (and 33 more ways to cook with Guiness this weekend).

DIY gold foil tumblers.

This post from Emily that highlights her journey from beginning blogger to queen bee — happy five years!

At home with Amy Smilovic.

Sometimes it’s okay to take a mental health day.

Good blogs are weird. (Let your freak flag fly!)

My New Name

friday love / a thousand threads
This weekend I’m off about town to finally tackle my name change. In practice, the whole thing was done long ago… I’ve even started to get used to introducing myself. But when I pull out my license or write a check, I still have to revert back, and it’s all really kind of a mess.

I’ve waited so long because little did I know, getting ahold of our marriage certificate would take two months on its own, since I had to have it mailed from California. Naturally, I also had to send my *request* for the darn thing by mail (to be carried on horseback across the plains, I assume… possibly by Kevin Costner).

So at this point I’m sure you can imagine my excitement to finally have the chance to get this done… even if it does mean that I have to go to each place – social security, DMV, etc – individually and hand them my certificate so they can send it by carrier pigeon into the abyss.

I’m hoping to have it all done by the time I have to travel in May, but I’m not holding my breath. Have you all had experience with this process? It’s so much crazier than I would have ever imagined!

Here are a few of my favorites this week… I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Keep your fingers crossed for me that all goes smoothly.

This whole line via Honey Kennedy.

This cream cheese pound cake.

This warm wintery dinner party from Sunday Suppers.

Handwritten Easter eggs.

Loving the idea of a flower crown over a drop veil — such a pretty DIY.

Obama’s “Jedi mind meld.”

Will you read Sheryl Sandberg’s book?

Salted caramel shortbread gets me every time.

Being a speaking creative.

So many things about this story.

Happy holiday weekend!

winter shoot by jessica lorren
It is my firm belief that the final day before any big break should be spent sipping margaritas at a three hour lunch… but sadly, that never does seem to be the case. It’s a busy day ahead, both at work and at home… with plenty still to do to prepare.

What do you have on your list for these next few days? Even the most prepared of you still have at least a couple of errands to run… right?

(Lie to me, it’s okay… it will make me feel so much better.)

Before I run off to search for something remotely resembling wrapping paper, here are a few things I’m loving…

This gorgeous winter shoot by Jessica Lorren makes me want to bundle up and spend all of my time outside.

One of the most terrifying things I’ve ever seen (no it’s not gory or anything, but if you’re afraid of heights you might not want to look).

Hilarious.

Oh, hey, how about the fact that it’s not the end of the world?  Tara Reid will be so relieved.

5 great books for bloggers.

Healthier comfort food… for that time between Christmas and New Years when you know you should eat right, but you really don’t want to…

Beard porn.

Instagram is dead.  Thoughts?

So much better than an inflatable Santa.

Welcome to the Weekend!

christmas
Just one more work week ’til Christmas!  (is that right?)

This weekend I’ll be holing up in my kitchen with a glass of wine and a great excuse to bake all of the ridiculous delicious-ness that lives on my pin board.  Christmas cookie time is my favorite… my pots and pans are literally sprouting legs and walking themselves to the oven as we speak.  They’re that excited.

Do you have any special plans?

Here are a few of my favorites…

Brilliant.

A Sunday Suppers book!

Colbert on cynicism.

I am a nerd.  And these are super cool.

This perfect little Christmas tree.

Understated Christmas decor.

Oh goodness.

Homemade bitters.

10 rules for a successful Christmas tree brought to you by your favorite non-practicing WASP.

Because you are.

These kill me with their cute-ness.

Our house is super cold in the winter… (hint, wink)

Because I don’t know, Mariah is synonymous with Christmas and this is awesome.

Jen Huang can do no wrong.

Happy Friday!

fall wedding inspiration
And cheers to another holiday weekend!  I’m excited to cozy up with a big sweater and a cup of something warm to trim our lonely tree.

We took a trip to the farm last weekend and carried the little guy home, but it’s been such a non-stop week that the poor thing has just been waiting, staring at me through the window when I come home at night… whimpering a little when I leave in the morning.  I’m embarrassed to say what terrible tree parents we are… but this weekend, it’s time we dress the guy up.

We’re also planning to brew a little holiday beer… anyone out there have any tips?  Because right now we’re just hoping to come up with something remotely drinkable…

Here are a few things I’m loving this week…

This lovely fall wedding inspiration.

My favorite holiday tradition… Santa tracking.

This is just… it looks too delicious for words.

Sweet stocking stuffers.

This gorgeous DIY winter wedding wreath.

Holiday desktop backgrounds?  Why not.

The latest book I’m reading (and loving).

This adorable little family and their van.

Friday Link Love

french farmhouse christmas
Oh how I’ve missed my link love!  During the day, when my mind inevitably wanders toward my reader all I have to do is think of this weekly post and suddenly I feel so productive (hey, cuddly kittens do equal productivity, right?).  It’s totally not my fault, I have to read the blogs so I can… keep up… my… own… okay maybe there’s a hole there but never you mind.

Anyway, I’m having so much fun catching up on everything I’ve missed the past few weeks, especially the holiday gift guides that seem to be everywhere (and thank the stars for that because I need them desperately this year).  It’s crazy to jump from the beach straight into the holiday season, but it just makes me that much more excited to get into the spirit… and by that what I really mean is that the mulled wine begins now.  It’s cold.

But seriously, bring on the Christmas cheer, with a little break in my back pocket I’m relaxed and ready to go.  I might even try a DIY or two.  Who knows?

(Don’t get excited, I DIY at approximately a third grade level.  We’ll be lucky if everyone comes out alive.)

What are your plans for the weekend?  Are you as excited for the holidays as I am?

Here are a few things I’m loving this week…

French farmhouse Christmas bits I pine for every year… and while we’re at it, I’ll take the farmhouse too.

I’m seriously considering making cranberry relish this weekend just so I can have this (I am actually pretty sad I missed out on leftovers).

Do you send holiday cards?

I can see this packing guide coming in super handy.

A Subtle Revelry’s holiday issue.

Tons and tons of healthy smoothie recipes. (also: healthy booze)

Nutella cinnamon rolls.

You should be mine.

Whiskey escort cards — brilliant.

Happy Friday — and I’m off!

drive through tree
Thank you guys for all of your kind words on the redesign!  I’m so excited to finally have the chance to show you all — and to see it in action!!

But to tell you the truth… I’m even more excited for something else that’s happening this week.  We touched down in California on Wednesday and have been balancing wedding prep with as much down time as possible.  It’s even more beautiful than I remember it up here.

I’ll be gone for a couple of weeks, but I’ve asked a few of my very favorite bloggers to contribute while I’m away — and you guys, these ladies blow me completely away with their talent.  Be sure to come back, because I’m telling you, you’ll really be missing out.

I have one last list of Friday links for you before I go!  Have a lovely Thanksgiving and stay warm in the snow if it’s headed your way (we might be battling some rain here ourselves… cross your fingers for us…).

Here are a few things I’m loving this week…

California love.

Some pretty pumps I wish I had.

Fishtail buns!

Wouldn’t this just make the house smell perfect (and taste delicious too)?

I need to do this for Christmas.

This might be the prettiest camera strap ever… okay no, it is the prettiest camera strap ever.

Some old school Bob. <3
