Big Stripes and a Bigger Scarf

We used our extra long weekend to go for long walks, longer drives, and catch up with old friends.  I was hoping to get into a little early spring cleaning, but the whole thing panned out so nicely that I never had the time.  We caught up on a couple of movies (Wreck it Ralph, then Skyfall… did you see them?  I loved them both.) and a little bit of work.  But mostly, we took plenty of time to cozy up and keep warm at home.

Of course… we may have wandered out once or twice for a second helping of the corn beef here.  We’ve just recently discovered it, and the knowledge that it exists just can’t be unlearned.

I have a feeling that’s going to be very bad news for us both.

Emerson Fry

Just when I’ve really started to ache for spring, Emerson Fry isn’t helping the matter.

What do you think? I’m kind of excited for what looks like a few new t-shirts, since I practically live in this one from the EmersonMade days.

For the guys…

bow ties for the groombow ties for the groom
Happy Monday!  I thought I’d start the week off with these great ties from Bull Moose Bow Ties… because, well first of all that’s a great name.  But really, when this little shoot by RJSTILLS came my way on Two Bright Lights it made me smile.  Ties are such an important part of a groom’s attire — I know Mark spent months searching for just the right one — so every time I hear of a great new company I get super excited.

Bull Moose’s ties are completely custom — you can even provide your own fabric (an old shirt you can’t bear to part with, maybe?) — and a full 25 percent of the purchase price is donated to The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

I don’t know about you, but I’m keeping these guys in mind the next time I need a great gift.

Bundling Up

bundling 14 bundling 11
Out of fear that I might somehow jinx myself into the coldest, most biting January and February ever, let me just say that I am soo not complaining, but… for the second year in a row we seem to be having kind of a really warm winter… practically tropical for these parts.

And I know I usually complain about the cold, but guys… the truth is I really miss the snow.

I was totally prepared for a big one this year… so prepared, in fact, that I am now the proud owner of the awesomest of big, furry, super warm hats that might imply I live somewhere near a village of Eskimos, rather than you know… the mid-Atlantic.

I’m a wimp, but right now even my wimpiness can withstand the current temperatures…

Unless, of course, you take me to 9 degree weather for “fun.”

I use the quotes because to me, a 9 degree ice chamber sounds strikingly similar to torture… but to Austin and every other child on earth/okay adults too, me included… when the ice is shaped like Shrek and the three little pigs it’s totally worth it.

And even though I think we were all a little disappointed that there weren’t more sculptures (I mean it’s Ice! with an exclamation point) 9 degrees can overtake even the warmest of hats on a big wimp like me… so I was more than ready to retreat to the warmth outside once our ice tour was done.

Fall Leaves

fall leaves / a thousand threads
The east coast and I have a love/hate relationship… I always get so excited about the seasons… I squeal at the sight of the first snow in the winter and cherry blossom in the spring. Of course all that joy stops short when I’m left a itchy-watery-sniffly cherry blossom mess and the snow gets all icky and brown and piles up on the side of the very slippery road like dirt.

Okay it’s possible that when it comes to the weather out here, I might lean a little closer to the ‘hate’ column… but the fall is the best. No allergies, no extreme heat or cold… this tiny little sliver of a season is all I get that resembles home (and then some, because the leaves are in no way as beautiful on the west coast). So you can bet I wait for the fall all year.

What is your favorite season? Or are you lucky enough to have mild weather all year?

Did you say that summer is almost over?

shorts and blazer

Because my skin didn’t get the message.

To tell you the truth, even when I’m super tan, I’m really not.  My mother would call it my beautiful “porcelain skin.”

Nice spin, mom.  Way to make the little lady feel a little better while she slathers on that sunscreen.

Well played.

I’ll admit it, I’m a bit of a hoarder.

vintage jams dress

When it comes to my closet, I have some real hoarder tendencies.

No matter how many times I sort and toss, there are always a few (dozen) things I know I’ll never wear, but I will also never throw away.

I can’t.

Some are sentimental, some are just plain cool (somehow, someday, I swear I’ll find a use for them) and some, well okay some just don’t have any explanation at all. But they’re there… and they’re never going away.

One day I’ll be tragically smothered under a crushing pile of vintage slips and cowboy boots…

“She couldn’t stop,” they’ll say, “We always knew it would get out of hand.”

Anyway… I was pretty sure this dress was destined to remain in the second category forever… hanging there, staring at me… daring me to figure it out.

But this past weekend I finally had the eureka moment I was looking for.

The key is really the belt… because without it, I think this vintage Jams dress (that if I’m going to be really honest, I think I’ve had since I was 12) is one very small step away from a muumuu.

Once I found the right belt, the rest seemed to flow pretty naturally, and really, after figuring it all out… I’m a little lost as to why I’ve found it so tough to style in the past!

I’m kind of inspired to tackle the rest!

Because of course, wearing them all is much more realistic than throwing them away… even the boots that are two sizes too small.

Don’t judge.
