Hibernation Season

a thousand threads
We’ve officially entered that portion of the year where all I want to do is hide inside under the covers with a really good book until spring begins to break through… so the bright colors above have been calling to me particularly loudly this week (doesn’t that room just look like summer to you?).

It’s about this time every year that I start to get irrationally excited about Groundhog Day, because who knows, the little bugger might be right!  And even if he’s not that lack of a shadow never fails to give me hope.  So until next weekend, when my hopes could be dashed… that’s what I’m running on: irrationality.  It seems to be working out.

Stay warm this weekend!

Here are a few things I’m loving this week…

This lovely elopement in New Zealand.

Beautiful advice.

This fantastic little camera.

The sunny pink home that I’m craving.

How to blog, from a blogger I admire a ton.

“Today women in the military will revel at the news. Tomorrow they will go back to work.”

I love gnocchi and I love tomato soup, so… winter perfection?

Vodka root beer floats sound like a terribly wonderful idea.

David Lebovitz’ interview with Matt Armendariz (and Matt’s new book — I need this).

Oregon’s new coach went to my high school!

An Invitation and an Honor

wedding invitation
Hey — are you in the Baltimore area? Because if you are, I’d love to see you at the Two Bright Lights Bootcamp in Baltimore next week! If you’re a photographer, vendor, or editor, the event will be an awesome opportunity to network and learn a little more about using this little tool — given the fact that they’ve totally revolutionized the way wedding publications accept submissions, it’s possible that you might have seen them around. I’m honored to be co-hosting, and can’t wait to see you there!

You can pick up your free tickets here — and hurry, these things always seem to go so fast.

And on another note, I’m proud to say that A Thousand Threads has been listed as one of the top 100 food blogs to follow in 2013 here! I’ll try to live up to the honor this year — so stay tuned. I already have a few things in the works!

Happy Inaugural Weekend!

oh my deer print
The inauguration is a pretty big deal no matter where you live, but for those in and around DC… it’s pandemonium. This weekend, I’m excited to celebrate and witness a little history in the making. Keep your fingers crossed that I don’t freeze or get mauled by an excited horde of nerds… those political junkies can be dangerous.

What are you up to this weekend? Will you watch the inauguration on Monday?

Here are a few things I’m loving…

This print and quote are perfect.

25 gorgeous — and free — romantic fonts.

I think I really want to take this class.

Gloria’s new design studio!!

Your life is about to become like the Hunger Games — good luck.

I’m melting.

Is it possible that after all this time, we’re still not following each other on Twitter and Facebook?

Let’s do something about that.

If you’re out there and you have one, both, or something else (Instagram? Pinterest?) leave me your info in the comments today. I’d love to add you to my list… and I bet there are a few others out there who’d love to add you too!

As much as I would love to be there next week, who says you have to be at Alt to connect? Let’s do a little online networking!

One Little Goal

desktop
January is all about new beginnings, and as a result we all have so many goals — I have lists upon lists.

But since my biggest goal this year was to simplify, I thought I’d start a new tradition. Each month, I’ll pick one little goal to focus on. The only requirements are that the goal be 1) relatively easy to accomplish and 2) something that will improve my life.

It’s simple and, kind of like checking a box off on a list, it provides a little sense of accomplishment – the kind that usually is reward enough to keep moving on to bigger and better things.

Plus, I’m pretty sure these tiny changes are more likely to stick, since it takes around 21 (28? 20-something…) days to create a habit, and I’m giving it around 30 before I try to tackle something new.

Friday Link Love

fresh herbs
Oh, the sick!  I hate being sick… and the whole thing has rendered my brain entirely useless.  So tell me, what are you up to this weekend?  Because I’ll be under the blankets with a bucket of tea.

Here are a few things I’m loving…

These squash and goat cheese empanadas look amazing (with fresh herbs, above).

This shot of Scorsese — he was so young!

Galette des rois.

5 opportunities to introduce yourself — perfect for an introvert like me.

“… nothing this rewarding comes without risk and sacrifice…”

Fishs Eddy has a blog — and it’s kind of adorable.

Glitter Guide’s 20 favorite Instagram accounts.

Love the idea of not just starting a book club, but hosting a little party to go along with each book!

Mark and Laicie Brew Some Beer

beer brewing / a thousand threadsbeer brewing / a thousand threads
Now that the fateful tasting day has passed and I can safely say that I haven’t been poisoned, I’m super excited to share some shots from our recent beer brewing adventure!

If you follow me on instagram you might already know that our (kind of middle-of-nowhere) town has a pretty fantastic “brew your own” facility where a guy and a gal can gain access to brewing equipment they’ve scarcely dared to dream of and go to town.

The place is kind of amazing…

Happy first Friday of the year!

chocolate chip cookie baileys shake
And it came so quickly!  That’s the best news of all.

I can’t say this without Mark looking like he might cut me (he had to work) but it was a little rough to get back into the groove after having had almost a week and a half of vacation (my life is so hard!).  Early mornings, trying to eat right again… boo-hoo to me, I know… but I do have to say that seeing all of you again has been entirely wonderful.  I’m looking forward to a fantastic new year and hoping that each and every one of you had an amazing holiday season!  Here on the blog — it’s good to be back.

Here are the first few things I’m loving for 2013…

Because everyone else is sharing salads and kale chips… kit kat cheesecake bars and cookie shakes.

Oregon obvs — One more year!

I know the holidays are over, but I just love this little gathering so much I had to share.

2012 favorites from This is Our Jam.

An Illustrator how-to.

A few super cool e-course suggestions.

And if you’re looking for e-courses, this one looks pretty amazing too.

It’s an older DIY but I’m dying to do this.

(Now where to put the chair?)

With Intention

with intention / a thousand threads
Too often, I try to do everything… to be everything. So in 2013, rather than write a long list for the new year, I was inspired by one of my favorites to choose a focus.

2012 was an amazing year, but it was also a struggle. So many pieces (that I don’t even think I knew could) fell into place… and it’s a cliché, but I really have never been happier. I feel lucky every day. And maybe it’s because I really am so happy at home that my head has gotten all chatty about the other things. Or who knows, maybe it’s because I’m getting closer to 30… closer to babies and savings and grown up decisions I don’t quite feel ready to make. Maybe it’s all of those things, but I feel like I’ve been moving in so many different directions that a light breeze could blow me any which way.

There are so many things I want to accomplish and so many paths I’d love to take, but chasing them all is bound to come up short… so my focus for 2013 is to simplify.

When I returned from our honeymoon, I wrote down my goals for the week, the month, and the year, and my first for the year was to “focus on authenticity and stick to a purpose.” This has been on my mind for a while. Purpose. Intention. Authenticity.

It’s time to slow down. It’s time to focus… and I’m looking forward to finding out what this year holds.
