52 dates // a thousand threads
The date // A little Tony’s party with friends.
The food // Much too much good stuff… we brought pie, croissants, and a baguette.

I don’t always catch the Tony’s, but it’s really a shame. As a kid, my dream was to go to Juilliard. I never even applied – and I’ll admit that today I still feel a little pang of jealousy when I see a great show. But I also feel so terribly proud of my friends who have followed their dreams, and so very lucky that life has led me down the road it has. So I have no regrets… but sometimes, I don’t watch the Tony’s. Unless, of course, one of those amazing friends of mine has a viewing party.

We spent our Sunday morning at the market (another great day!) then came home to a little bit of clean-up and a nice long rest cuddled up on the couch. When the evening rolled around, even though the urge to stay right there was strong, we pulled ourselves up, dressed in our comfiest best and headed out to our party. And I couldn’t be happier that we did.

Sometimes we spend so much time avoiding a something, for fear of any bit of discomfort, that we completely forget just how much joy that thing can bring. I never did follow that dream, I found new ones instead, but my love for it will never die. I will always be that nerdy kid hanging out in the green room, singing songs from Rent and cheesing over Stanislavsky. And I will always love watching a good show.

Did you watch last night? How frickin’ awesome was Neil Patrick Harris as Hedwig? I think I might need a trip to New York.

Counting down

// a thousand threads
This whole, Alt-is-going-to-be-here-before-we-know-it-like-in-just-over-a-week, thing is beginning to set in, and I’m equal parts excited and terrified. So this weekend I’ll be working furiously to make sure I have everything in order before the week is done.

I’ll be putting the finishing touches on my talk about “getting your editorial calendar under control,” tying up loose ends around the house and at work/for the business, and combing through my closet for the perfect combination of clothes that can be carried in just one small(ish) bag.

Oh, and I’ll also be counting down the very last few sad, beautiful days of my 20s. Did I fail to mention that before?

Hmm…

Of course I’ll also be carving out at least a little bit of time to enjoy this gorgeous weather. (Changing the subject is always appreciated when it comes to the imminent approach of my old ladydom.)

Happy Friday! Do you have any plans?

/////

Eye this Portugal workshop by Local Milk & Little Upside Down Cake.

Buy all of this outfit… maybe buy it for me.

Make this rosé hibiscus spritzer.

Bake these doughnuts for doughnut day (which should be every day).

/////

An oldie but such a goodie, whether you’re going to Alt or to any other big event.

For the mom who makes.

Darn those lady hurricanes and their “blustery” ways.

And in honor of the information noted above, these are pretty much all already true.

How to work with brands

how to work with brands // a thousand threads
Last week I posted a link to an article by Casey Neistat that I thought hit the “sponsorship” nail on the head. In it, he talks with some disdain about the folks who’ve reached out to ask him how they might talk a big brand into paying for their vacation. His answer boils down to this:

I have made 86 videos for my YouTube channel in the last couple of years. 8 of them were for clients, 78 of them were for me. My focus is and always has been on making the work I care about. It is an honor to have found a way to get paid to create work like this, something I value greatly. There are no shortcuts. No one is going to pay for your vacation, no one cares, no one gives a shit and they never will. If you want something, anything, do the work and earn it.

It’s harsh, but true, and I can identify with what he means. There are no easy breaks here… and the goal isn’t the perk. The perk is just a nice bonus. The goal is the dream.

On the other hand, I know where those folks are coming from. The ones who contact Neistat about sponsorship unicorns. And it’s not always, as Casey understandably assumes, that they’re really just looking for someone to finance their vacation. Rather, I’d be willing to bet that most of those folks are looking for some way, any way, to follow their dream. Because whether that dream is to write or take pictures or make films or art or anything else, we all know it won’t come cheap. So in today’s world of underfunded art programs and shrinking newspaper staff, makers and doers are turning inward, looking for a way to reach their goals on their own… and the path that many, including both Casey and those who’ve reached out to him for advice, are turning up is that sponsorship is key.

But how do you make it happen? How do you catch the eye of one of those brands that really “gets it” and is willing to invest in the power of a dream you both share. Well in addition to reiterating the advice quoted above, because it will be hard work, I thought I’d pass along a few real-world tips I’ve picked up along the way.

Bacon-wrapped pork meatloaf

bacon-wrapped pork meatloaf // a thousand threads
I love fresh, local food, so now that we’ve launched Dough Uprising, spending every Sunday at the farmer’s market is basically a dream come true.

Not that we weren’t there a lot anyway, but at this point we’re basically letting the market dictate our menu – both for our pies and for our dinner.

When we came home with some gorgeous, purple spring onions, we made homemade pizza… and when we came home with 2lbs of local pork, well… naturally we had to make a meatloaf.

52 dates // 22

52 dates // a thousand threads
The date // Cozying up with a good book and a snack.

Lately, since we have so little, we’ve really been working to take advantage of our off-time to relax and enjoy the moment… and rather than just zone out in front of the tv, we’ve been loving the chance to grab a good book and take turns reading chapters out loud.

As I mentioned last week, we’ve both been meaning to get into the Game of Thrones books for a while, and reading together is so much more fun than just moving along at our own pace.

Of course we’ve been watching the show (and if you have too, don’t even talk to me about last night, I’m still so upset…) so, so far, the story isn’t much of a surprise, but it’s been fun to dig a little deeper together and stop to talk and ask each other questions… or dream up elaborate theories about how it’s all going to turn out. As if we could ever guess.

(Although it would be nice if one day this damn story would stop breaking my heart… you know, for a while. Is next week going to be even worse? Ugh I can’t even stop talking about it myself…)

Do you ever read to each other? We never had until now, and it’s so amazing!

Let me just say right now, short weeks are the best. It’s Friday again and I cannot wait to get back out in the sun. Especially because this weekend we have absolutely nothing on the roster beyond our work at the farmer’s market — my very favorite kind of plan.

Warm asparagus salad with dry aged salami and lemon

warm asparagus salad with dry aged salami and lemon // a thousand threads
Weeknights can be crazy around the Heeley house… I usually walk through the door around 8pm, tired and dazed, with a long list of to-dos to finish up before we both head off to bed.

But often Mark makes the nights a whole lot more enjoyable by meeting me at the door with something tasty. We have some old standbys, and it doesn’t have to be fancy, especially since both of us have already had a long day… but while I’d truly be just as happy with a bowl of oatmeal as anything else, sometimes he just can’t help himself.

Mark spent almost a decade managing kitchens prior to the work he does now, and if it weren’t for the hours and unpredictability I think he’d still be doing it. There’s no doubt he’s happiest there, and where I love measurements and ratios and tweaking a recipe little by little until I’ve got it just right, Mark walks into a kitchen like an artist, throwing in a handful of this and a sprinkling of that until he’s created a masterpiece — and this recipe right here is one of those masterpieces.

Truth be told this recipe came to life as a result of whatever we happened to have in the house — some leftover salami, a few lemons that never made it into a pie, spices in the cupboard and some fresh, seasonal asparagus we’ve been meaning to cook up for some time. But we knew right away, as soon as we took the first bite, that it was something we’d be making again and again. The savory, salty salami and tart lemon work together to create what might be the tastiest asparagus dish I’ve ever had. And with just a little bit of crusty bread on the side you have the perfect, easy weeknight meal that also just so happens to feel totally gourmet.

The date // Memorial Day at the beach

This Monday we packed up the car for a quick day trip to the beach. The drive is only about 3 hours each way, but lately life has been so busy that we’ve found it hard to make it out — so we knew just what we wanted to do with our holiday.

The weather was perfect, the beach was beautiful, and to make it all just that much better, on the way down we downloaded a book we’ve both been meaning to start (okay it’s Game of Thrones, what can I say?) and took turns reading chapters to each other while we lazed in the sun. It was just the relaxing holiday we both needed.

Now I’m happy to be back so we can catch up! Tell me, did you do anything special to celebrate?

Happy weekend!

// a thousand threads
If you’re headed into a long one, enjoy! We’ll definitely be making the most of ours, spending the first half immersed in apples and strawberries and rhubarb and all sorts of pie goodness, and then maybe going on a little day trip to spend some time in the sun.

I hope you have an amazing, relaxing, sunny start to this lovely pool season of ours — I’ll see you all back here on Tuesday!

But before you go tell me all about your plans!

Eye this inspiring, eclectic home in Sweden.

Buy this perfect summer top.
