Singing in the Sun

my favorites this week / a thousand threads
The weather — uh-oh, here she goes with the weather, original move there, Laicie… no but really, hear me out — the weather is so fantastic in DC right now that I think it might actually be physically impossible to be unhappy. The stifling summer heat has given way to something that feels, almost disturbingly, like fall. It’s quiet, calm, and no matter the troubles that lurk underneath… right now anything seems possible. With the fog of humidity cleared from my brain, the world seems new.

I’m looking forward to a weekend that promises more of the same gorgeous sun, and plan to make a point to sit back and breathe it all in. How about you? Any big plans?

P.S. Anyone going to Alt SLC? I just bought my ticket yesterday and I’m still on a high — hoping to see some of you there!

P.P.S. I’m sharing my fall reading list over at Refinery29 today, go check it out and let me know if you have any other good recommendations, I always like to keep a few in waiting!

Eye this crazy-fantastic, eclectic Philly loft.

Buy this pretty two-sided shirt.

Make this great industrial diy garment rack.

Bake this mouth-watering spiced plum and honey cake.

Pip over at Meet Me at Mike’s shares some of the rituals and tools she’s used to get through writing 24,088 words of her book.

An interesting discussion on babies.

Smoke pot as a kid? You might be more likely to become an entrepreneur.

Potato chip cookies, because potato chips make everything better (srsly, sandwiches with potato chips tucked inside? yum…).

30 Days of Self Portraits

30 days of self portraits / a thousand threads
If you’re following along on Instagram, you probably already know that yesterday was a bit of a milestone — that is, if you can call a study in how-long-can-your-friends-stand-to-stare-at-your-silly-face a milestone…

Yesterday we came to the end of 30 days (30. nonstop. days.) of self portraits, and while guys, I am so relieved that the next time I don’t feel like doing my hair or makeup or moving from the couch, nobody has to know… I’m actually really sad that it’s come to an end.

30 days not only forced me to get way more creative and way more acquainted with my iPhone camera than I’ve ever been, it also helped me to hate the idea of taking a picture of myself a whole lot less…

If you remember, this is where I began.

And by the end, I was taking full-on toothy happy pictures like the last one here…

Happiness

jean jacket / a thousand threadsjean jacket / a thousand threads
A few nights ago, Mark and I found ourselves watching a documentary about happiness, and I’ve been thinking about it ever since. It made the important point that our wants and our needs tend to work in opposition. Say, the want for new things vs. the need to explore and feel personally fulfilled. Most of the time, the things we think we need don’t make us happier in the end.

… something I try to remember every time I have a desperate desire to go on a shopping binge.

Luckily this jean jacket cost me just $15, and I think I can say with fairly high confidence that when the sale is that good… the happiness gets to stay.

Goat Cheese, Blackberry and Honey Popsicles

goat cheese, blackberry and honey popsicles / a thousand threads
Usually, when I cook, I try to think about the things that Mark and I both like — he hates olives, for example, so it’s pretty rare that we snack on a muffaletta.

But this weekend, when nothing sounded better than a goat cheese and honey popsicle (two evil elements that I love — and that come together just perfectly in these pops) I decided that the best part about making something only I’ll dare to eat might just be that I get to keep it all to myself.

Envy and Accomplishment

the best to eye, to buy, to make, and to bake / a thousand threads
You guys — I really love these discussions of ours. Thanks for chiming in yesterday on your struggles with Insta-envy! It was oddly reassuring to me to hear that we’re pretty much all dealing with the same thing. And, of course, to hear all of your good advice and reassurances. It’s so important to remember, both with social media and with blogging, that what we all put out there for the public is just a tiny snippet of our lives… and however messed up they might really be (or however messed up we just think they are… we’re always a whole lot more critical of ourselves than others might be, right?) they probably look pretty perfect to someone else. You never truly know what’s on the inside until you get to know someone for real.

That said, I hope to make a point to be honest here on this little blog (and I hope that I have in the past). Please feel free to call me out if you’re ever feeling annoyed — because like most of us, when I look at myself I usually see the imperfections first… and obviously try to cover them up (ha). But if things ever start to err on the side of “I’ll kill you if you say one more thing about your damn tomatoes” — or something, I don’t know, let me know. I’m happy to throw in a few notes of reality… how tough it is to juggle all of the jobs I work, how much I worry, how much I’m sure Mark worries about me. Nothing is perfect, but in the end we’re all working to create a life that is as close to our own version of perfect as it gets (whatever that might be). We’re all trying hard to do the the right thing, and live the right life for us, and that’s all we can do.

I was driving home yesterday, thinking about all of the things I “need” to do, worrying about not getting enough done, worrying about falling behind… worrying about the wide gulf that still exists between where I am, and where I’d like to be, and suddenly some part of me said, “You’re working as hard as you can possibly work… how stupid can you be to beat yourself up over the things you’re not doing? You should be congratulating yourself for all of the things that you are doing.”

And that’s the sum of my life, right there. I’m rarely happy when I’m not working on something… I like to be busy. Blame my parents for involving me in so many extracurricular activities as a kid. But no matter how busy I am, I always worry that I could be doing more. And that’s a terrible fault, because so often, it robs me of the satisfaction and happiness I might get from enjoying my accomplishments.

So today and for the future, I’m going to try hard to make it a point to resist the urge to pick and occasionally give myself a little pat on the back… and I’d love it if you would too. Because ladies, I’ve seen some of your Instagram accounts… and they’re pretty freaking fantastic.

Just sayin’.

Love you all, have an amazing weekend.

Eye this simple, perfect home.

Buy anything and everything (and especially this apron) from Food52’s new Provisions.

Make this adorable diy pet food station.

Bake these cardamom caramel ice cream sandwiches.

I think I need a puppy room.

This is a few weeks old, but somehow I managed to miss it… and dear god, please someone get me a croissant loaf right now.

Do you suffer from Insta-envy?

insta envy / a thousand threads
So here’s a question. How do you feel about all of this social media we have in our lives?

According to this article, Instagram is pretty much the sum of all evil, and I can’t say I disagree.

That doesn’t mean I’ll give it up.

But Mark and I had a long conversation after reading this, and he has a good point. In his view, it’s just one more modern iteration of “keeping up with the Joneses” — this kind of envy has existed for years (maybe forever) and will continue to, technology or no.

What do you think? Do you suffer from insta-envy? Do you think things are any different now than they were in the past?

Alfred Morris and Mason Crosby Talk Home Fitness

As part of a new partnership with Lenovo that launches today, I had the chance to ask two pro football players about their off-season workouts. Here, Alfred Morris, of our own Washington Redskins, and Mason Crosby of the Green Bay Packers have some tips for how to fit exercise into your routine at home.

Football fan or no, I think you’ll find them useful. I especially love to hear that Mason is a fan of yoga, since I know that, personally, I couldn’t get by without it.

How do you fit exercise into your day to day life?

P.S. Questions about my new partnership? Let me know! Just rest assured, I won’t be posting anything here that I don’t love 100 percent, and you shouldn’t expect any new sales-y content. Just me, like always… with a little extra help and opportunity.

Our First Trip to Newport Folk Fest

newport folk fest / a thousand threadsnewport folk fest / a thousand threads
Getting to Newport Folk Fest has been a dream of mine for a while now, but somehow the reality managed to be a thousand times better than I’d even imagined.

The intimacy of the shows and side-projects, where we were able to see some of our favorites perform no more than 10 feet away, and the casual, supportive family atmosphere. Newport isn’t like any other festival I’ve seen. Artists stick around for each others’ performances, hang out in the beer garden, play separate shows together in the evening, and make the whole weekend that much more special with their honest and enthusiastic presence that, let’s face it, isn’t always a given at a show.

I was totally blown away by the whole experience — and I’m counting the days until I get to go back.

Here’s a little wrap up of the shots we took, at the shows and around town…
