Our Wedding // The Stars

our wedding stars / a thousand threadsour wedding stars / a thousand threads our wedding stars / a thousand threads
During our ceremony, along with our handwritten vows, we chose to share the following reading…

Understand, I’ll slip quietly
away from the noisy crowd
when I see the pale
stars rising, blooming over the oaks.

I’ll pursue solitary pathways
through the pale twilit meadows,
with only this one dream:
You come too.

Nothing could sum us up better than that… slipping away under the stars, just us two…

And I’ve never seen anything like the stars on that night.

Thank you all so much for your kind words this week. It’s been such a pleasure to share our day!

Our Wedding // The Film

This. I don’t know where to begin with this. I wanted to post our whole wedding film, vows and all, because from the second it begins… I cry. There are very few things I own that mean as much to me as this little film.

I will be forever grateful to The Cana Family (you should really check out their gorgeous new website, by the way) who not only made this happen, but introduced us to the best band ever — we were almost ready to give up our search and I swear they read our minds… they found just the band for us — and truly made our whole day that much more amazing just by being there. This is the icing, you guys… I couldn’t have asked for more.

Next up: The Stars

Our Wedding // The Party

our reception / a thousand threads
In addition to being one of the happiest days of our lives, our wedding was also kind of an amazing party.

After Mark and I kicked things off with our first dance, everyone was quick to join in (it was hard not to with such an amazing band!).  The dancing went on all night, and even escalated to a point — I still have no idea how this started, but it was incredible — where everyone at the party co-opted an instrument and played along…

Our Wedding // The Reception

our reception / a thousand threads
In true California form, the week leading up to our wedding was gorgeous.  Sunny, low 80s, just right for an outdoor wedding.

Then we arrived, and immediately things went south.  Rain, fog, cold, you name it… the weather was bad.  My biggest fear was that we’d come to this gorgeous place high up in the mountains to get married, and on the day of the wedding the fog would be so thick that we wouldn’t be able to see each other, let alone the view.  By the time Saturday came, I didn’t even mind if we had to move things inside, but I was done with that fog.

Of course, we were lucky…

Our Wedding // The Ceremony

our wedding ceremony / a thousand threads
I didn’t think it was possible, but our ceremony was even better than I could have imagined.

Even though we went back and forth over what it should include, all we really needed were our vows.  Staring into Mark’s eyes through my tears, saying the words I’d pored over for months… I’ve never meant anything more.

Our Wedding // The Look

Those of you who’ve followed along for a while know the whole story behind my dress… how I knew it was right, but then just continued to worry… because well, that’s me.

Like most brides, I obsessed a bit about the dress, shoes, veil or no veil, sash or no sash… but in the end, by some stroke of pure luck, everything came together in a way that I truly loved.

Close Calls

friday favorites / a thousand threads

We’re here! And darn lucky for it – I’ve never had such a close call at an airport and still made my plane. After over an hour at security, we found ourselves begging to cut in line (you – guy on his way to the Middle East – you are amazing, thank you!) then making a run for it.

The whole thing was pretty farcical, really… running running running just to sit on the world’s slowest tram… staring out the window at our plane and driving farther and farther away to the other end of the terminal.

We finally made it with about three minutes to go… but now we’re here! Home – my favorite place in the world. We’ve already had my favorite breakfast and we’re on our way to wine… it just doesn’t get any better.

Here are a few of my favorites this week. I’ll be on the run until Tuesday, but posting the whole way on instagram… so be sure to keep up over there and I’ll be back soon!

Have an amazing weekend!

Eye this gorgeous spring shoot by Ryan Ray (on Ryan’s site here, and Style Me Pretty here).

Buy this perfect summertime tote that I’m coveting like crazy.

Make a pretty painted floral tablecloth.

Bake this tasty rhubarb tart.

Did you see these two on Leno? They’re the cutest.

This amazing mom who photographed her daughter at 5 as the real women she can be.

The prettiest little recipe for one of my favorite drinks.

And if you need to catch up on the week’s news, remember we’ve always got you covered!

Homemade Mallo Cups

homemade mallo cups / a thousand threads
Over the past few years, mallo cups have come to be synonymous with road trips in our house.  Already, there’s something about road trips and junk food that’s a given — you just can’t be cooped up in a car (or plane) for hours at a time without a little sugar to keep you company– but these days there’s just one thing I crave as soon as I get in the car, and that’s a mallo cup.

It might have something to do with my obsession with marshmallows (and especially marshmallow fluff omg… don’t judge) but mallo cups are the best.  Gooey, marshmallow-ey but with an even better texture — I’m telling you, my love of these things is so great that it even knocks out my hatred of shredded coconut.

The power of the mallo cup is a serious thing.  So when I came upon a recipe for what looked like a homemade version, I ran right to the kitchen and made it the same day…

How often do you feel like you need a vacation?

how often do you feel like you need a vacation? image by jose villa
Most of the time I’m so busy that when a vacation finally rolls around I’m in desperate need of the break.  Studies show that we need vacations to combat burnout and boredom, and even just the act of planning a vacation can make you happier.  I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you, but rest assured that science is on my side when I say that vacations are an essential part of life.

What do you think? Do you get to a point where you feel a little desperate for a vacation? How long does it usually take?

I think it’s somewhere around 3-4 months before the last break wears off and I’m ready for another.  Around that time, if we’ve just taken a big trip, we’ll usually go for something like a weekend drive out of town.  Since the stress tends to build a few times a year, we try to balance our vacations enough to fit a few in.

Are you as strategic about this whole thing as we are, or do you tend to let your vacation days build up without cashing them in?
