Our Wedding Invitations

You guys, I’m so excited to share this with you today.

Remember our Save the Date?  Well here’s the rest of the package, designed by the über-talented Matthew Novak, who took Mark’s simple pencil sketch of our farmhouse (and a little touch of calligraphy from Neither Snow) and transformed it into something more beautiful than I ever could have imagined.

I literally could not be more happy with how our whole invitation suite turned out.  If you’re in the market, seriously, run don’t walk.

Also?  I can’t believe it’s almost time to send these out.  My ‘knot’ checklist has officially downgraded me to the 2-3 month timeline… when I’m actually pretty sure it’s still 4… and not that I’m nitpicking or anything, but the head trip isn’t helping.

Just sayin’.

Family Meal, Moonrise Kingdom, and a Big Scary Storm

That’s our weekend, for the most part… some good food, a really great movie, and one super crazy storm…

On Friday night, after a long day of car trouble that meant Mark needed to take me to work, we decided to make the best of it all (extra time together!) and make our way to Family Meal.  The diner is the latest from Frederick’s favorite Voltaggio, and the food was just as good as we hoped.  We snacked on some seriously mouthwatering pot pie bites, Tillamook mac & cheese, and adult milkshakes (made with real vanilla — and a dollop of fluff).  And minus the heat, both inside and out, we had a pretty great time.

We went home to watch a little of the Tour and then head off to bed before waking up to a nice day at the pool and a little spinning of our own.  Mark is finally beginning to recover enough to get himself on a bike, as long as it’s stationary, and I think he’s pretty happy not to be confined to the couch.

On Sunday we woke up early for some homemade waffles with strawberries, almond butter, and whipped cream, our favorite (of course, not one thing I’ve mentioned has been on the wedding-approved diet… has it? shit), and hot yoga for me, then dressed up and headed to Silver Spring for a little date night at Cubano’s and the AFI.  I’ve been dying to see Moonrise Kingdom since the moment it hit the theater… and the seriously beautiful little Wes Anderson masterpiece didn’t disappoint a bit.

But let me tell you, big crashy scary storms and worried puppies… they do not mix.  In a bit of a departure from our very relaxing weekend… Mark and I spent the better part of last night comforting our little dude, trying to explain that the (admittedly pretty effing scary) crashing outside wouldn’t make its way inside to hurt us anytime soon.  He wasn’t convinced.

This morning I think we’re all feeling a little sleepy, especially since it’s still pretty gloomy out there… and this is looking like a really nice place to spend the day.

What were you up to this weekend?  And have you seen Moonrise Kingdom yet?  What did you think?!

Any Marylanders out there try Family Meal?

{Real Weddings} David & Heather’s Blue Beauty

I hope everyone had an absolutely wonderful 4th of July!

This Toronto beauty was just what I needed to help me through the back to work blues.

Did you do anything special for the 4th?  Tell me all about your day!  Five whole years and yesterday was the first time Mark has ever made me his barbeque ribs.

He’s been seriously holding out on me.

Blueberry Rustic Tart

So, what to do with all of those blueberries?

I’m not gonna lie, we made a pretty big dent just snacking on handfuls… but with so much fresh fruit in the house, we had to make something special.

I love to bake, and my go-to favorite for fruit is always a pie. But I really wanted to try something new, and if you’re on Pinterest, you’ll know why I was tempted by this particular treat. In the land of food porn, the rustic tart is king… and there’s a darn good reason for it.

The rustic tart (or galette) isn’t just pretty, it’s also super easy to make. You just make up a pastry dough, throw in some fruit with a little sugar, fold and bake. Done.

I used a dough from Tartine that, as it turns out, is completely worth its more time intensive nature… but if you’re looking for a quick fix you can always run to the store and consult with the dough boy… he makes a pretty rockin’ pie crust that could easily go from zero to galette in no more than an hour.

Because this particular dough really is a flaky, buttery wonder, I’ll share the recipe I used. If you want to use another (maybe this one, doubled?) or buy a pre-made crust, you can skip all the way down to step six.

Enjoy! And let me know if you try this crust. It’s different than anything I’ve ever seen, but oh so worth it in the end.

Blueberry Picking at Butler’s Orchard

Okay, so first off — the mr. is a blueberry picking champ.  I swear that with just one fully operational arm (collarbone still good and broken), in the 95 degree heat, he out-picked me two to one.

… not that I’m competitive.

Technically, I’ve never been blueberry picking.  I’ve been to pick strawberries a ton… but growing up, all I had to do to find a handful of fresh blueberries was walk over the river and through the woods (not joking) to my grandparents’ house.  And just like a certain crisp in the air never fails to remind me of summer mornings spent camping in Oregon, fresh blueberries will always remind me of my grandma and grandpa.

Friday Link Love

Friday.  You’re killing me this week.

I mean, “around 105“?  Up to 110 on Saturday?  The map is red, Friday, and I’m not by the pool.  We’re going to have to have a talk with Saturday and rectify this situation, because this is some serious shit.

All jokes aside, I hope you’re all staying cool.  It’s looking to be a pretty crazy weekend on this side of the country, so drink lots of water, wear lots of sunscreen, and do try to have a little fun!

Honestly, I think we’re planning to brave some 110 degree berry picking this weekend.  Crazy? Maybe a little… but I really want those darn fresh blueberries.

How about you?  Any fantastic plans for the heat wave?

Here are a few things I’m loving this week…

All of these lovely wedding hair features on Once Wed.

This crazy awesome super hipster wedding invite.

Brass.

The cutest and tiniest nursery ever.

That leather wine carrier wants to come home with me.

Helmet hair.

This beautiful food photography.

A Little Inspiration: 4th of July

Fruit Cones / Couple / Yarn Jars / Beer Vases / Strawberry Shortcake Pops / Blueberry, Strawberry, & Jicama Salsa

I know the holiday is little inconvenient this year, since it falls on a Wednesday, but are you planning a party for the 4th of July?

If I were, I would be all over those beer bottle vases and yarn jars.  I feel like they’re just the right mix of pretty and fun… and could be thrown together even at the last minute for very little dough.

… did you notice how I’m talking you into throwing a party?
