Strawberry Peach Skillet Cobbler

strawberry peach skillet cobbler / a thousand threads
So apparently the summer is over, now that Labor Day is gone (you know, if you ignore the fact that its still 90 degrees outside) and even though I’m in full-fledged denial (don’t even talk to me about that “w” word) I have started eating my favorite cold-weather treat.

I know that it’s generally known as a summer dessert, but warm cobbler is just so much better curled up by a fire with a cup of hot cocoa on the side. It’s the quintessential comfort food.

Of course, I did make this one with some summery fruits, because I know you’re not quite ready to move on either.

And because the peaches right now are kind of insane. I guess there’s at least one good thing about the summer coming to an end…

Pisco Sour

pisco sour / a thousand threads
Mark and I officially discovered the Pisco Sour on our honeymoon in Peru, and were immediately hooked.

We’d heard of the drink before, but since pisco isn’t all that common in the U.S., we’d never had one — and beyond the name, we pretty much had no idea what we were getting into.

Pisco is made with grapes, like a brandy, but to me, it tastes more like a tequila. In fact my first thought on the sour was that it tasted a little bit like a frothy margarita.

That is, until it knocked me on my ass.

Turns out, a Pisco Sour is more akin to a martini than a margarita in that it’s nearly all alcohol. The difference is that you’d never know.

Maryland Crab Cakes with Spicy Jalapeno Slaw

maryland crab cakes / a thousand threads
Nothing says summer in Maryland like the smell of Old Bay and a really killer crab cake… and I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say that Mark’s recipe is the BEST. Hands down.

… in fact I’m pretty sure he’s still mourning that fact that he’s giving it up.

This is the first time he’s shared…

Goat Cheese, Blackberry and Honey Popsicles

goat cheese, blackberry and honey popsicles / a thousand threads
Usually, when I cook, I try to think about the things that Mark and I both like — he hates olives, for example, so it’s pretty rare that we snack on a muffaletta.

But this weekend, when nothing sounded better than a goat cheese and honey popsicle (two evil elements that I love — and that come together just perfectly in these pops) I decided that the best part about making something only I’ll dare to eat might just be that I get to keep it all to myself.

Avocado Egg Toast

avocado egg toast / a thousand threads
Oh you guys, where did my Monday go? Mark and I drove back from Folk Fest late Sunday night (okay all Sunday night) and, unsurprisingly, played zombie all day on our last day off.

I’m just coming back to reality now, though I have to admit I’m still on a little bit of a cloud, and I can’t wait to share all of our pictures and stories from the weekend soon. For the time, though, lets talk about this tasty sandwich…

Toasted Vanilla Bean Bourbon Shake

toasted vanilla bean bourbon shake / a thousand threads
Mark thinks I’m gross, but marshmallows are my weakness. I could eat a whole bag. Add a little bourbon and a fresh vanilla bean into the equation and I’m done…

This shake was inspired by a concoction that’s served at one of our favorite restaurants in town. Really, it’s the most boring adult shake on the menu… so boring that these days you’ll only get it if you ask. But I still think it’s the best by far.

Leek & Swiss Chard Tart

leek & swiss chard tart / a thousand threads
This recipe is such a favorite that I had to get around to sharing it eventually, so when I came across Zephyr Fields’ basket of fresh chard at the farmer’s market a few weeks ago I knew it was the perfect opportunity.

The recipe, like most quiches I’ve found, is quick and easy to make, but unlike most quiches, it’s filled with fresh, flavorful ingredients that would probably be insulted by the addition of something fatty like cheese (pah! cheese… who wants that?).

Boozy Strawberry-Watermelon Wine Pops

watermelon wine pops / a thousand threads
Since we’re busy getting all of the rain out of our system today (right, clouds?) I’m just going to run with the assumption that the 4th of July is going to be gorgeous. Perfect for these strawberry-watermelon wine pops.

And if not, well… they have wine in them. Do you really even need the sun?

The Story of the Strawberry Pie (with Vanilla Mascarpone Cream)

strawberry pie / a thousand threads
Even though it took us a whole day to find the strawberries for this guy (strawberries, strawberries everywhere and not a… drop to drink?) it was totally worth the effort.

Just so you know, for the future — if the strawberries at the farmer’s market look fantastic, buy them. Even if you don’t have a plan to use them. Because later you might decide that you do, in fact, have a plan. Then, in a fantastically tragic fashion, you’ll long for those gorgeous farmer’s market strawberries. Suddenly the hard, sad little strawberries at the grocery store (delicious as they might be) just won’t be good enough. You’ll have to have them fresh from the vine. But it’s hot and humid and you don’t particularly want to pick them yourself.

So what’s a girl to do but drive from county to county in search of fresh farm strawberries on a late Sunday afternoon when they’re mostly sold out? Nothing, I tell you… there was no other option.

Nonetheless, I think even Mark would agree that the journey was worth the reward… you know, now that he can look back and laugh.

Garlic Scape Pesto and Fresh Mozzarella Grilled Cheese

garlic scape pesto and fresh mozzarella grilled cheese / a thousand threads
If you’ve never heard of scapes, I’m sorry for the information I’m about to give you. I’m sorry because after you taste one of these curly, crazy looking little plants, it’s entirely possible that you might form the same attachment that’s about to send Mark and I back to the farmer’s market to rush the poor farmer that sold them to us… lest you (and we) tragically miss all of scape season, which is just a few weeks at most.
