A Beautiful August

stripes / a thousand threads
I must be in the twilight zone… because so far August has been gorgeous. Cool, 80s, no humidity… just the perfect weather for spending the evenings outdoors…

It couldn’t possibly be real, but just in case… don’t pinch me.

If I’m dreaming, I never want to leave.

Back to Work

the best to eye, to buy, to make, and to bake / a thousand threads
Whew — the first week back to work after a really great vacation is always rough, but I’m slowly getting back into the swing of things and, now that I’m a little more rested, feeling pretty refreshed. It’s tough to come back, but that little bit of time off always makes the return just that much more productive.

Here’s to a little less burnout and a whole lot more weekend coming up soon — any big plans?

Eye this sweet little home on a canal boat.

Buy this simple, pretty ceramic and leather necklace.

Make your own skateboard!

Bake homemade ice cream conesthen do this! My mouth is watering…

What makes a good running blog? (About running, but I think it applies across the board.)

How to talk to your daughter about her body — via Anne and Emily on Twitter.

Wanna start a blog? Just do it.

Can we have one of these in Frederick, please? Who’s in for opening one? (I’m kind of serious.)

I was kind of obsessed with The Postal Service once upon a time (okay I still am) so this 14-minute documentary is fascinating to me.

Newport Folk Fest 2013 // The Essential Playlist

newport folk essential playlist / a thousand threads
I’ve been singing since I came home, so I thought I’d share a few songs from my favorite shows.

I didn’t include the Avett Brothers, Lumineers, or Frank Turner here because I think you’re probably already in love (if there are any there you haven’t heard, though — run, don’t walk). These are the bands that are waiting to be loved just as much.

So if you’re not already listening, check them out. Folk Fest always catches the best of the best.

And if you’re thinking it’s all banjos and harmonicas… think again. Folk is an ethos, not a sound, and no festival understands that better than Newport.  There’s a little something for pretty much anyone on there (although, okay… I’ll admit… there are a few banjos and harmonicas too).

5 Fantastic Things // July

spirit family reunion at the paste ruins / a thousand threads
5 FANTASTIC THINGS

I want to remember…

1 // Umm… can we talk about that picture up there? Two words: Folk Fest. Hands down the best concert-going experience I have ever had. (More on that later, I promise.)
2 // Spending time with family, and finally having the chance to share our wedding video, at the Boilermaker.
3 // Celebrating six years with my guy, and two years with this blog! (I’m terrible, I know… I passed it right over. We’ll have to find a nice little way to celebrate.)
4 // Successfully growing real, red, EDIBLE tomatoes for the very first time. Our little plant outside is so damn healthy it almost makes me want to cry.
5 // Deciding to rise up and take a big risk.

I’m looking forward to…

1 // Taking it easy. Right now we don’t have many plans for August. We’re headed to see Black Prairie perform with the lovely folks above on the 18th, but that’s it… and I can’t wait. I plan to savor every single day off and spend as many as possible next to the pool. It’s been such a busy summer so far.
2 // Brainstorming some big ideas.
3 // Studying for the GRE. I think it’s time to take the leap.
4 // Okay so still, yes to #1… but maybe also squeezing in a little bit of camping? I really am craving a little sleep under the stars.
5 // ….. maaaaybe getting my first tattoo?

Avocado Egg Toast

Oh you guys, where did my Monday go? Mark and I drove back from Folk Fest late Sunday night (okay all Sunday night) and, unsurprisingly, played zombie all day on our last day off.

I’m just coming back to reality now, though I have to admit I’m still on a little bit of a cloud, and I can’t wait to share all of our pictures and stories from the weekend soon. For the time, though, lets talk about this tasty sandwich…

Road Trip Roundup

the best to eye, to buy, to make, and to bake / a thousand threads
Today’s the day — I’m writing from the Jersey Turnpike on our way to Folk Fest, a little delirious from the 4am start, but I couldn’t be more excited!

Keep up with all of the details over on Instagram, and have an amazing weekend! I’ll see you back here next week.

Eye everything about this stunning wedding in Big Sur (think, even prettier version of Outstanding in the Field).

Buy this cute collaboration between J. Crew and the High Line.

Make monogrammed favors for your next party.

Bake some strawberry gin & tonic cake.

Stay classy, DC.

Why Stephen King spends months and even years on his opening sentences.

This adorable family tree decal.

How to digitally detox in 5 easy steps.

P.S. Did you catch A Thousand Threads on Refinery29 this week?! Pretty much my dream come true.

… and as always, don’t forget I’m over at The Everygirl today if you need a little update on the news.

Live // Exposed Radiators

exposed radiators / a thousand threads
Am I alone in my obsession with exposed radiators? Is it just because I don’t have them?

I know some folks would hate to have to decorate around a big hulking piece of metal on the wall, but I just love their vintage charm.

What do you think?

Boilermaker Bonus Video

Did I mention that Mark ran the whole 15k with a camera strapped to his chest?

Here’s a little bonus video he put together from the footage, just in case you were wondering what it’s like when 18,000 people descend upon a town of only about 60,000 just to run like hell and drink like crazy.

The short version? It’s pretty great.

Toasted Vanilla Bean Bourbon Shake

Mark thinks I’m gross, but marshmallows are my weakness. I could eat a whole bag. Add a little bourbon and a fresh vanilla bean into the equation and I’m done…

This shake was inspired by a concoction that’s served at one of our favorite restaurants in town. Really, it’s the most boring adult shake on the menu… so boring that these days you’ll only get it if you ask. But I still think it’s the best by far.
