I’ve been so good, trying not to spend too much since we still have a fair amount of wedding debt to pay down… but shopping got the better of me last week (see as evidence: my new sweater and shoes).

Okay so this post could obviously go in a lot of directions.  Does she mean running while eating?  Is that something like running with scissors, or before you swim?  Is she even talking about running at all or have we moved on to swimming?

Not quite… although when I learned the truth I’m about to reveal, I was just as confused as you probably are right now.  The truth is that when I took up running, I was about 99.9 percent certain that my newfound passion would also, conveniently, be the ticket to both rock hard abs and unlimited pizza.

This wasn’t quite the case.

Two Holidays (And a link of my own!)

Link Love 3-16
Almost St. Patrick’s Day! Do you have any big plans? We’re on our way to celebrate with friends, so I’m looking forward to plenty of Irish whiskey and inexplicably green goodies… although after another of this week’s holidays left me snacking on two different types of pie (pizza and lemon meringue — a girl has to celebrate) I should probably go light on the latter.

In addition to all of the lovely things I’ve been ogling on the web this week, I have to start by sharing a link of my own! Say hello to the newest columnist at The Everygirl. I’m so excited to be contributing to a brand new weekly roundup of the news, CliffsNotes-style — take a look and let me know what you think! And after you do… have a fantastic holiday weekend!! Drink some green beer for me.

Here are a few of my favorites this week…

Marais USA’s new collection, via Matchbook Mag.

Pretty florals from Tinge.

A fishing party from Bash, Please!

Stout cupcakes with chocolate-covered pretzels (and 33 more ways to cook with Guiness this weekend).

DIY gold foil tumblers.

This post from Emily that highlights her journey from beginning blogger to queen bee — happy five years!

Live // In Bordeaux

The eclectic simplicity of this home in Bordeaux really caught my eye this week. I just love the perfect mix of modern and vintage, something I’ve been trying to perfect in my own home for a long time now.

What do you think? Clearly the home wins on location alone, but would you go for a big pink flamingo in your living room?

I’m kind of in love with him myself.

Do you worry about work vs. children?

bleubird vintage
I’ve just started reading Sheryl Sandberg’s book, Lean In — and while I do love me a good feminist manifesto, I was particularly interested in this tome because of its focus on work-life balance (something I’ve touched on before).

The book has created a bit of a firestorm, but aside from the controversy, the central issue remains.  As a newlywed, thinking more and more about the choice to have a child, the question of work-life balance weighs heavily on me.

If you’ve yet to have a baby, do you worry like I do?  Or did you, prior to having a baby… and how have things worked out?  I see you quiet readers lurking out there… talk to me!

Bailey’s Irish Cream Crêpe Cake

bailey's irish cream crepe cake
Okay, so I can’t necessarily claim that this recipe is Irish… but it does have Bailey’s, and I’m Irish… so… I know, this defense is getting more painful by the minute. But isn’t it fancy? Doesn’t it just make you want to plan a St. Patrick’s Day party right now so you can show it off? Or is that just me…

A Thousand Miles // Taking Time

Wanna join me and share updates in the comments on your own progress?  Maybe even sign up for a race (even if it’s your first)?  It’s so much easier to stick to a plan when you have a community of support!

With running, as with most things in my life, I can be a little impatient.  So when I start a new training program, I can occasionally over-reach.  The problem is that I can rarely admit it, and usually my over-reach turns into a little bit of a disconnect between what I think I’m doing (what’s written on my plan) and what I’m actually doing (absolutely nothing like that).

My New Name

friday love / a thousand threads
This weekend I’m off about town to finally tackle my name change. In practice, the whole thing was done long ago… I’ve even started to get used to introducing myself. But when I pull out my license or write a check, I still have to revert back, and it’s all really kind of a mess.

I’ve waited so long because little did I know, getting ahold of our marriage certificate would take two months on its own, since I had to have it mailed from California. Naturally, I also had to send my *request* for the darn thing by mail (to be carried on horseback across the plains, I assume… possibly by Kevin Costner).

So at this point I’m sure you can imagine my excitement to finally have the chance to get this done… even if it does mean that I have to go to each place – social security, DMV, etc – individually and hand them my certificate so they can send it by carrier pigeon into the abyss.

I’m hoping to have it all done by the time I have to travel in May, but I’m not holding my breath. Have you all had experience with this process? It’s so much crazier than I would have ever imagined!

Here are a few of my favorites this week… I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Keep your fingers crossed for me that all goes smoothly.

This cream cheese pound cake.

This warm wintery dinner party from Sunday Suppers.

Handwritten Easter eggs.

Loving the idea of a flower crown over a drop veil — such a pretty DIY.

Obama’s “Jedi mind meld.”

Will you read Sheryl Sandberg’s book?

Salted caramel shortbread gets me every time.

Being a speaking creative.

So many things about this story.

Snow Day

snow daysnow day
That’s it — the last gasp of winter. Unfortunately yesterday’s snow day wasn’t quite like this. I guess we were expecting a little too much from snow in March (Austin was just a little guy in these shots — he’s almost 7 now! — and we’ve barely had another good snow since).

I know I complain a lot about the cold, but there’s something about a really good snow day that you can’t help but love. Even though yesterday wasn’t ideal — no playing or building snowmen in that wet mushy stuff — Mark and I made the best of our day off and whipped up some warm soup and homemade cookies, then curled up for an evening movie and a glass of wine. Even if the snow let us down, the day definitely did not.

Maybe next winter we’ll have another big one… but for now, I can’t say I’m all that sad.  It’s past time to start warming up!

Love // Barn Wedding Inspiration

elegant barn wedding inspiration
This wedding was so pretty I just had to get in touch with the bride. You can read all of her answers and advice to other brides below — while you gawk!

Wow, that venue! It’s amazing. How did you decide on it? Were there any particular challenges you ran into with the location?
Colin and I both love the outdoors and we liked the idea of having the ceremony and celebration at one location. The Morton Barns really lent itself to this (not to mention the amazing lodge we all stayed at). The weather in Nebraska is always unpredictable and initially I was a bit nervous about an outdoor ceremony in October but we couldn’t see ourselves doing anything else, so I didn’t worry about it. The day of, it was a little chilly but our hearts were so warm that it didn’t matter!

Your wedding was beautiful.* Looking back, what is your favorite part of the day?
It’s hard to pick just one part! But, if I have to choose…I’d say the ceremony. To have all of the people who mean the world to us present to celebrate our love was almost overwhelming. When they opened the barn doors I was overwhelmed with joy and then I saw Colin… I will never forget that moment. At one point, when we were saying our vows, we heard an owl hooting and then a marching band started playing. There was just so much amazing energy; I never wanted it to end.

*None of this would have come together without my mother. She helped us carry out our dream…and really was the one who connected us to our vendors.
