Labor Day Lists

I have always been, and will always be, a list maker.

It’s compulsive.

My little notes app on my iPhone is full of them… with duplicates and additions in my Things organizer and my task list in gmail (as I write this I am ever more aware of the need to consolidate).

But with this wedding upcoming, I fear lists may be taking over my life… just a little.

It’s August. This is supposed to be my time to catch up… but no such luck.

It’s like they’re waiting for me around every corner, ready to pounce… with a million little unchecked items.

And they are ever. expanding.

So my goal for the rest of this month is to keep up with my lists. Not eliminate, just keep up… because that, my friend, is a whole task of its own.

I’m looking to check a few big ticket items off by Labor Day, and I’m looking to be satisfied when I do… because sometimes, you just can’t shoot for it all… you have to be able to find happiness in enough.

In fact, maybe I should try to find happiness in enough a little more often.

How about you? Do you keep lists?  And how do you keep it all in line if you don’t?

Shouldn’t the groom get to look good too?

Brooklyn Tailors

There is nothing quite so wonderful as a man in a well-tailored suit… and, in my opinion, nothing quite so unfortunate as a groom in a suit that doesn’t fit.

This is one place where I’m always a little confused when it comes to weddings. Why, when I am encouraged by the media to spend upwards of $10,000 on a dress (I didn’t… I promise) is my guy encouraged to run on down to the nearest rental shop for whatever he can find? (naturally I’ll eat my words if you’re the kind of bride who also has chosen to rent your dress — which is totally possible these days)

I believe that my groom should have the opportunity to feel just as fantastic as I do on our day.

A day at the (penny farthing) races!

This Saturday, 25 racers from around the country lined up in downtown Frederick to compete in America’s one and only high-wheel race.
Mark and I came out, with a ton of other folks, to cheer the competitors on, who rode their penny farthing bikes through the streets for a full hour.  At the end, the person who had logged the most laps was declared the winner.

Have I mentioned how much I love my little town?

The weekend is here, the weekend is here!

sarah yates lou mora wedding max wanger

I’m looking forward to soaking up the last bits of sun (since August refuses to slow down) and maybe attending this, which couldn’t possibly be anything but pure fun. Any great plans of your own?

I’ll leave you, as always, with a few things I’m loving this week…

Sarah and Lou’s beautiful wedding, shot by Max Wanger.

Mark started a fitness blog!! And it’s really (really – I swear it’s not just because I’m biased) good.

We’ll miss you more than you probably ever knew we would, Peter Bis. I’ll try not to eat too many cookies and cupcakes… even though you won’t be there to remind me.

I love t-shirts, so naturally I ordered 3.

I been wanting to know how to do this to my hair!

Crack pie.

Networking lessons from Ugly Betty.

Baby boy prep — for the coolest baby boy.

OMGOMGOMG.

I really want to throw Mark a birthday party that rocks as much as this.

Wedding Invitation Wording that Doesn’t Suck

It took us forEVER to decide on our wedding invitation wording.  It’s not that we were all that indecisive, really, but the thing is, unless you’re planning to go completely traditional, or are a master wordsmith, there aren’t a whole lot of alternatives out there.

In fact, I felt a little overloaded by options that sound suspiciously like a nursery rhyme.

So let’s just say I spent a few (million) hours scouring the web for something a little less traditional that also didn’t suck, and after all of that time invested, I thought I should share a few of my favorites (many of which come from this amazing list here… a treasure trove of unconventional alternatives, it is).

Of course, all of the options listed below can be mixed, matched, and adjusted as you like. Take a little from here, a little from there, until you have the perfect combination.

And if you’re looking to include a really great quote, don’t forget about our very own Quiet Sundays.

(oh, and scroll all the way to the bottom of the post if you want to see the wording we eventually settled on)

What do you think? Would you go with something super unconventional, or do you prefer more traditional wording?

I’ll admit it, I’m a bit of a hoarder.

vintage jams dress

When it comes to my closet, I have some real hoarder tendencies.

No matter how many times I sort and toss, there are always a few (dozen) things I know I’ll never wear, but I will also never throw away.

I can’t.

Some are sentimental, some are just plain cool (somehow, someday, I swear I’ll find a use for them) and some, well okay some just don’t have any explanation at all. But they’re there… and they’re never going away.

One day I’ll be tragically smothered under a crushing pile of vintage slips and cowboy boots…

“She couldn’t stop,” they’ll say, “We always knew it would get out of hand.”

Anyway… I was pretty sure this dress was destined to remain in the second category forever… hanging there, staring at me… daring me to figure it out.

But this past weekend I finally had the eureka moment I was looking for.

The key is really the belt… because without it, I think this vintage Jams dress (that if I’m going to be really honest, I think I’ve had since I was 12) is one very small step away from a muumuu.

Once I found the right belt, the rest seemed to flow pretty naturally, and really, after figuring it all out… I’m a little lost as to why I’ve found it so tough to style in the past!

I’m kind of inspired to tackle the rest!

Because of course, wearing them all is much more realistic than throwing them away… even the boots that are two sizes too small.

Don’t judge.

{Real Weddings} Martin & Nina

real weddings / a thousand threads
This super fun German couple worked hard to make sure their day was a perfect representation of themselves, and nobody else… even shunning the idea of a traditional wedding cake in favor of mincemeat pie!

I couldn’t possibly say it better than the bride, so I’ll let her tell you all about their beautiful DIY day…

Get married? No way! Should it still happen some day, then by no means in a white wedding dress. That was my staunch and constant conviction. But then finally came my dream prince, and the dream wedding followed.

In our relationship things are a bit different. The proposal was not made in the traditional way by my boyfriend, but by myself. For the two of us it was clear from the outset that we were going to have a big wedding party – with all our good friends and the entire family. We started planning our wedding two years in advance by opening a “wedding account.” Initially that was all.

We did not want to have our party in a city venue but somewhere in the countryside and so we quickly opted for the cozy Café del Sol, which is situated near the Rhine in an idyllic nature reserve. The owner’s last name was “Sunshine,” and so of course we decided in favor of his place.

… We started collecting old vases: big, small, medium-sized, simple, trashy, broken or still intact. It did not matter. We only wanted them to have charm and fit the occasion. At best they were meant to give our guests a feeling of having a history of their own. We also collected all sorts of empty bottles: wine bottles, champagne bottles, ketchup bottles. We decorated them with bright ribbons, roses and laces. Additionally we filled marmalade jars with brightly colored lemonade tablets.

… Despite rainy weather it became the most beautiful day in our lives.

… Though my husband and I are quite sweet, we did not want a sweet wedding cake. Knowing our meat-loving friends, we wanted to delight them with something more solid: a minced meat pie with onions. Many of our guests told us afterwards that the pie was THE highlight of the evening.

I think our wedding was a real success.

Key Lime Meringue Tart with Shortbread Cookie Crust

Key Lime Meringue Tart with Shortbread Cookie Crust

This weekend was nothing short of crazy.  Mark spent Saturday shooting a friend’s wedding, and I tagged along to fumble with the camera assist.  By the end of the (very hot) day we were spent, and still haven’t nearly recovered, but when we wandered by these little buggers on a Sunday supermarket run I just couldn’t resist.

Key lime pie is Mark’s favorite.  It had to be done.

Here are a few things I’m loving…

These gorgeous engagement shots from Ryan Ray.

This beautiful poster by Naomi, for her little girls’ room.

All ice cream sandwiches should be this cute.

Do you know your neighbors?

How to be friends with another woman.

Okay I really think I need to make doughnuts.

Colorful hangers (and picture taking tips!).

This totally perfect budget wedding.

Who wants to have a potluck?

As the summer quickly fades (stop already, August!) I find myself more and more in need of a really good backyard BBQ.  Of course, Mark and I have only a little pittance of a back yard, so we might need to get creative, but never you mind… what I’m really craving is this…

potluck / a thousand threadspotluck / a thousand threads

These shots make me long for a potluck… good friends sharing their favorites.  How come those aren’t as popular as they used to be?  Just the word evokes images of June Cleaver dresses and JELL-O molds.

That’s right, with the big JELL-O letters those molds.

But maybe it’s time we brought it back.  And not just the practice, but the word.  Maybe it’s time we had a good old fashioned potluck.

Who’s in?
