Live // Top 5 Green Modular Homes
(OR The Sexiest Mobile Homes You’ll Ever See)

Lately, Mark and I have been dreaming about buying a little piece of land and putting up a prefab home.

But don’t mistake what we mean by “prefab,” the days of the double wide are long gone.  Not that there’s anything wrong with a double wide — actually I spent my first few years in existence in one while my parents built our house.  Sometimes there’s nothing better, because a few years spent in something less than ideal can eventually yield your dream home.  But the thing is, these days you really don’t have to settle for anything less than ideal.  In fact, you can get a pretty good start on a dream home right now for around $100-$150k.  Of course, it’s easy to spend a whole lot more (see above) but the options are out there.  Tons of them.

These are a few of our favorite green modular homes that run anywhere from tens to hundreds of thousands… there really is something for every budget.

Now to find that perfect piece of land…

How often do you have the itch to redecorate?

joineryjoinery
And how do you scratch it when the budget is low? Do you try to make a few small changes, maybe rearrange some furniture?  Do you buy new pillows, paint a wall, or browse the local yard sales?

Mark and I have lived in our house for close to three years now, and over that time we’ve barely made a change.  So lately we’ve been dying for a little bit of an update.

Right now we’re working on all of the above… and actually those yard sales have yielded some pretty exciting projects that I can’t wait to share. But the process is slow, and we have to be happy with just a little bit of a change here and there, knowing that one of these days we’ll be able to chip away at our wish list and make things look the way we want.

What creative things do you do when you start to have the itch?  Any ideas we should try?

Live // In a Barn

barn style / a thousand threadsbarn style / a thousand threads
When I was eight, my sister (who is sixteen years older) bought me a pony. And there began a long journey that I’m sure my parents cursed my sister for more than once… but that also defined my childhood.

Ponies led to horses and horses led to lessons, trail rides, and rodeos — not to mention summers that were booked before they even began. My parents were troopers, carting me from competition to competition all over the west coast and eventually building a big red barn that, although the horses are gone (neither of my parents ride) still stands today.

When I was little I wanted to live in the loft… build a little apartment. Now, if I could, I’d convert the whole thing. There’s just nothing better than a barn conversion. But until now I hadn’t thought to do things the other way around. This house in Marin County was remodeled with some of the most gorgeous barn details I’ve ever seen, the perfect mix of rustic and modern. Not to mention brilliant architectural details like those built-in heating vents, inspired by the holes in an owl box.

Live // In a Church

providence chapelprovidence chapelprovidence chapelprovidence chapel
Mark has always wanted to live in a church (really). For the longest time, there’s was this cute little chapel for sale in the town next door, and he would sigh every time we passed, desperate to buy it and renovate it to look, I assume, something like this.

In this Providence Chapel conversion, London theater designer Niki Turner worked with architect Jonathan Tuckey to retain the stillness and warmth of the space and make the remodel as sustainable as possible.

I’m dying over those giant windows, that bookcase, those floors… and can we talk about that chalkboard kitchen island?  Beautiful.

Live // Wood Burning Stoves

I grew up with a wood burning stove, so these guys have a special place in my heart — not to mention that the influx of stacked wood as design I’ve seen on Pinterest makes me want one even more.

Just add it to the checklist for our next home!  Along with a clawfoot tub, knotty wood floors, and a fantastic view… should be no problem, right?

Live // In Bordeaux

The eclectic simplicity of this home in Bordeaux really caught my eye this week. I just love the perfect mix of modern and vintage, something I’ve been trying to perfect in my own home for a long time now.

What do you think? Clearly the home wins on location alone, but would you go for a big pink flamingo in your living room?

I’m kind of in love with him myself.

Hibernation Season

a thousand threads
We’ve officially entered that portion of the year where all I want to do is hide inside under the covers with a really good book until spring begins to break through… so the bright colors above have been calling to me particularly loudly this week (doesn’t that room just look like summer to you?).

It’s about this time every year that I start to get irrationally excited about Groundhog Day, because who knows, the little bugger might be right!  And even if he’s not that lack of a shadow never fails to give me hope.  So until next weekend, when my hopes could be dashed… that’s what I’m running on: irrationality.  It seems to be working out.

Stay warm this weekend!

Here are a few things I’m loving this week…

This lovely elopement in New Zealand.

Beautiful advice.

This fantastic little camera.

The sunny pink home that I’m craving.

How to blog, from a blogger I admire a ton.

“Today women in the military will revel at the news. Tomorrow they will go back to work.”

I love gnocchi and I love tomato soup, so… winter perfection?

Vodka root beer floats sound like a terribly wonderful idea.

David Lebovitz’ interview with Matt Armendariz (and Matt’s new book — I need this).

Oregon’s new coach went to my high school!

Happy Inaugural Weekend!

oh my deer print
The inauguration is a pretty big deal no matter where you live, but for those in and around DC… it’s pandemonium. This weekend, I’m excited to celebrate and witness a little history in the making. Keep your fingers crossed that I don’t freeze or get mauled by an excited horde of nerds… those political junkies can be dangerous.

What are you up to this weekend? Will you watch the inauguration on Monday?

Here are a few things I’m loving…

This print and quote are perfect.

25 gorgeous — and free — romantic fonts.

I think I really want to take this class.

Gloria’s new design studio!!

Your life is about to become like the Hunger Games — good luck.

I’m melting.

This romantic engagement shoot by Max Wanger.
