Initial Alt Summit reactions

alt summit // a thousand threads
I’ve been mulling over my thoughts on Alt for a few days now — trying to decide where to begin.

It’s hard to write about insecurities. And for some reason, post-Alt, I seem to be full of them.

The thing is you guys… Alt was so good. It was amazing. I connected with folks I haven’t seen in months, and folks I’ve only ever seen online… not to mention a boatload of incredible, sweet, generous new friends. And all are the kind of people you’d be lucky to meet just a handful of in a lifetime.

I feel incredibly grateful for a week spent with such amazing people, and incredibly inspired by the smart, creative, straight badass speakers I had the honor to listen to and learn from.

I also feel grateful for my sponsor, Lenovo, who made it all happen and even made it possible for me to give a tablet away to the sweetest, most appreciative Instagrammer who made my heart burst with excitement for her when she wrote. I was lucky to have a sponsor, and securing sponsorship for Alt was one of my goals for the year I can now say I’ve achieved.

But if I’m really honest… the truth is that I left Alt feeling a little overwhelmed.

My new cards (Because maybe you didn’t get one!)

letterpress business cards / a thousand threads
Hey, so you know what post I’ve had queued up and ready to go for a week, but haven’t gotten around to hitting publish? This one.

I know, I know… right now I’m supposed to be sharing other peoples’ cards, not my own. But I couldn’t leave them off entirely… they’re just too pretty, and Chris at Moxie Press deserves every scrap of credit I can send his way for the drop-dead beautiful job.

Not to mention lovely Moorea (who I finally had the chance to meet in person after all this time online!) for the beautiful logo that looks so great in letterpress.

Salt Lake City and Park City

salt lake city // a thousand threads
Before we get down to the serious Alt recaps (and while I continue to nurse another cold… damn this poor immune system and those airplanes) I thought I’d share some of my shots of Salt Lake and Park City!

Because you guys — I don’t know if you know — but Utah is crazy beautiful.

I mean I had a good idea — I’d driven through the state once before — but this was my first time to Salt Lake and can we just talk about the fact that those mountains are right there?

I also had the chance to visit Park City — where people are practically skiing right into their beds the slopes are so close. And on top of it all, I spent the day with the sweetest bunch of ladies who took me along to see a screening of Boyhood at the tail end of Sundance (bucket list, check).

Homemade cashew milk that tastes better than the real stuff

homemade cashew milk / a thousand threads
Okay so maybe that’s subjective — but I think it tastes pretty amazing, and it definitely tastes better than the nut milk you buy in the stores.

Even if you’re not a big fan of the real stuff – you might like this. It’s sweet and creamy and really isn’t anything like what I usually imagine nut milk to be.

Hell, it’s even white. Is nut milk white? I’m thinking my Almond Breeze is usually a slightly more boring shade of bland. Which is perfect, because it matches the watery taste.

Time to pack!

alt packing essentials / a thousand threadsalt packing essentials / a thousand threads
Today’s the day! I’m gathering all of the essentials to fly off to SLC in the morning. (Keep your fingers crossed that the buckets of snow currently falling outside don’t slow me down.)

And although I sort of hate packing (a lot…) I have to say I’m kind of proud of myself for being so prepared for this particular trip. I might even be done a whole day in advance!

So since I’m so super on the ball, here are a few of the essentials I’m taking along…

Top, clockwise: a big tote to carry swag / a keyboard for my tablet, to take lots of good notes / a phone to connect with new friends / a little black dress / some great accessories for said dress / a pretty pair of heels / a cute and comfy outfit for the day / red lipstick

Bottom, clockwise: my yoga tablet / some classic pearls / glasses so I can shield the sun / glasses so I can see / flats for when the heels are just too much / a pretty green dress / an even prettier matching necklace / some fancy shoes / a few little miracle workers from Nick Chavez to keep my hair in check / a very studious shirt / a lint roller

What have I missed? (Ha okay, a lot — how about a toothbrush?). So many things to think about when you’re going away.

52 dates // 3

52 dates // a thousand threads
The date // A picnic in bed! We’ve had a busy couple of weeks.
The food // Tuna sammiches
The drink // Session lager

This weekend was sort of the weekend of mini-dates. Mark and I are both traveling a ton this month, so the few days we’ve had in between trips have been extra special.

We’ve used the limited time as all the more reason to go out just a little bit more and stress the things we have to get done just a little bit less. So this weekend we had brunch at the Papermoon, drinks and appetizers at The Wine Kitchen, and last but far from least… our own little picnic in bed.

Alt summit love

alt edition link love / a thousand threads
If you’re spending a lot of time on the blogs this week and not headed to SLC, you probably feel like punching me right now. I’m sorry… I know. It’s a lot this time of year. It’s a lot for us all…

Outfits, media kits, business cards, blog updates — bloggers think about this stuff all the time, but for some reason when it comes down to crunch time (conference time) suddenly none of it feels like enough.

We want everything to be just that much better… or that much more organized… or just that much more new. (What is it about new clothes that makes them so much better than the rest? Even cheap new clothes from H&M. They win every time.)

So there’s a lot of “new” going on right now — a lot of organizing, a lot of perfecting. Or at least trying to perfect. And on one hand it’s totally overwhelming… but on another, and I think this is why we all have so much love and admiration for events like this, it’s also really inspiring.

There are a lot of really really talented creatives out there. And this is one time when you get to see them shine just that much brighter.

Stepping up your game might be a little stressful, but it’s also a blessing. One of many reasons we all look forward to conferences like this — whether we’re on the outside or in — is because they light a fire under our ass. They inspire us to do more, to create more, to refresh and renew… much like the new year. And what do you know, when it comes to the Alt Summit, the two coincide.

So ya, I’m obsessing. But that’s not always such a bad thing to do. We all do this thing called blogging because it’s what we love. The pressure to do more just reminds us of how much.

Bake some tasty treats for the 4am trip to the airport.

You should also make both of these beautiful scrubs — speaking of talented creatives.

This is BRILLIANT.

Valentines Day Giveaway // Datevitation

datevitation giveaway / a thousand threads
Want to give a really fun gift this Valentines — how cute would it be to give a date coupon book? I remember making things like this as a kid, but Datevitation takes them to a whole new level with adorable cartoons, gorgeous designs, and perfect packaging. This isn’t your standard coupon book from the internet.

Plus — and this I really love — Datevitation is a family business run by a husband-wife team. You can get to know Alex and Olga on the Datevitation blog, where they have tons of video guides with date ideas and romantic gestures.   You can even watch Alex propose in a video they posted on Youtube as a Save The Date!

Homemade chicken noodle soup

homemade chicken noodle soup / a thousand threads
When it comes to being sick, I’m a traditionalist. Chicken noodle soup, hot tea, warm blanket… prop me up on a couch and leave me there until it all goes away.

I’ll take the stuff, the NyQuil, the Theraflu, the this and that – but the only thing that ever really makes me feel good is the soup. That and ginger ale – even when it’s just a cold. I’m sure it’s all in my head but there’s just something about that stuff – it’s like Windex.

So this weekend, when both Mark and I were feeling bad, that sweet man did just the thing he knows I love and made me soup.

Homemade soup.

And just in case you’ve never had it, I need to tell you now that the homemade stuff isn’t even in the same category as the canned stuff – I’m pretty sure they’re different foods.

Sure, the Campbell’s can is nostalgic and the stuff can be tasty if all you really want is the broth. But for the real thing – the hearty, tasty, satisfying, cold-curing real thing – you just have to make it at home.

And, not to brag or anything, but Mark’s is the best…
