Szu & Girish’s San Francisco Engagements

San Francisco Engagement Shots / A Thousand Threads

My favorite engagement shots are always those taken close to home, in the place the couple loves most… so you can imagine how giddy I am over these next shots.

Szu and Girish started their day at the coffee shop where they first laid eyes on each other, then made their way through the city for the most perfectly bright and colorful engagements that shine right through the foggy San Francisco day.

Plus, there’s that little friend they brought along, who shines pretty bright on his own…

To those just starting out…

There is nothing more valuable than the advice of someone who’s been there, especially someone as admirable as Ira Glass.  This American Life regularly pins me to the seat of my car long after I’ve come home… waiting, needing to hear the end of the story… just so I can run inside and tell the whole thing to Mark (albeit very badly, and in not nearly as entertaining a way as Ira… while Mark looks at me confused).

As I strive daily to improve my writing, my photography, my blog, myself… I find myself coming back to this quote, over and over, and trying to remember that “It’s normal to take a while.”

If you know what good looks like, you can get there.  “You just have to fight your way through.”

Thanks Alison for sending this my way, I’ve needed it… and I thought a few others might too.

P.S. Do you ever go through the archives of your favorite blogs?  Like, the super duper successful ones?  Those blogs are perfectly polished now… but for most, there was a time (long, long ago) that they looked a lot like you.

It can be pretty inspiring.

Rainy Day Chores

Stamp / A Thousand Threads

It was a rainy holiday weekend here in Maryland, with the remains of Hurricane Isaac working their way up the coast and landing just in time to sabotage our sunny plans, but we made the most of the opportunity and hunkered down to finish a few nagging chores.

Picture editing, envelope stamping, workin’ on the camera skills… the thing is, everything is better when you’re together, so it wasn’t so bad.

Mark / A Thousand Threads

We spent the rest of the weekend taking advantage of the outdoors when we could, squeezing in a couple of runs and a little time at the driving range… then huddling under the blankets to take in a movie (so good) and sip a possible wedding champagne.

And of course, we didn’t let the rain stop us from a little end of summer ice cream at the best place in town.

Happy Long Weekend!

secret pool iceland

I swear to you, it’s the weirdest thing, but just taking a few minutes to set a really specific goal can make all the difference in the world.  Remember my lists?  Well I’m happy to say that over the past week and a half, I really do feel like I have been so much more productive!

I’m fully aware, of course, that it’s all a mind trip.  I made a conscious decision to be happy with each individual item I was able to check off my list, rather than strive for an empty slate, and ta-da!  Jedi power.

I’m not sure if it’s just that I have myself so completely fooled or if I really have gotten more done, but it really doesn’t matter.  I’m feeling a lot better about my accomplishments, and a whole lot better about myself, just in time for a nice long weekend.

Do you use any little mind tricks on yourself to accomplish your goals?

** Also, you guys, thank you for the big boost of confidence you have all given me this week.  Your comments have been so wonderful and supportive.  I hope you know just how much love I have for you all.  xoxo **

Here’s an extra long list for your extra long weekend…

That picture up there?  That is where I want to be this weekend.

This beautiful pottery.

Queen Elizabeth, rollin’ in her Range Rover.

Basically, this looks like the tastiest mimosa ever. Yum, Rhi!

I need to see this movie.

Pure. Genius. Lena, I die.

10 little things that will make you an exceptional client.

A refrigerator-free kitchen?

Emerson. Fry.

How to stage a strong comeback.

Girls, you have me so inspired to get organized this week!

I’m not sure I agree with everything in this article, but it’s interesting nonetheless.

Good advice.

I was really moved by these words (this is a little older, but I just came upon this blog this week, so it’s new to me… and maybe to you, too).

Wedding Budgets, They Triple

coffee talk: wedding budgets

Throughout this wedding planning process, I’ve spoken a lot about budgetary stress.

Of all the stress that accompanies the planning of a wedding (a ton) this is the thing that has hit me the hardest. I can try to rationalize it a million different ways, but the reality is that we are getting ourselves into a hefty chunk of debt, for a day… and something about that is deeply hard for me to swallow.

I often talk about my student loan debt (because it kind of blows my mind) and when I do I always express my regret that someone did not take me aside and explain — truly explain — what I was doing when I signed over the next 30 years of my life at just 21.

Did you say that summer is almost over?

shorts and blazer

Because my skin didn’t get the message.

To tell you the truth, even when I’m super tan, I’m really not.  My mother would call it my beautiful “porcelain skin.”

Nice spin, mom.  Way to make the little lady feel a little better while she slathers on that sunscreen.

Well played.

Who’s afraid of a little rain? Not us…

instagram lake

It was looking like a lost cause for a while there on Saturday.  We woke up to a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms and some very grey skies.  But in the end I’m proud to say that we all put on our big kid pants and decided we didn’t care.

Rain or no rain, we were going camping.

And hey, the gamble worked out pretty well!  The night was clear enough for a cookout and a campfire, and the rain didn’t start until we were safe in our sleeping bags, snoring away.

campfire

Of course, had things gone really bad, we weren’t roughing it that hard… the property we camped on had not just one but two pavilions… with lights… and a pretty sweet grill… and well, if things really went south, a cabin to hole up in.

Austin is six, so we haven’t quite made it to the hardcore backpacking adventures… those will come.  For now, when we take him camping we’re just looking for a good, secluded place to set up a tent and cook some s’mores.

Because naturally, the six year old is equally as concerned about the s’mores as I am.

the Fritch

I mentioned that the rain didn’t start until we were safe in our beds… and that’s true.  It also didn’t really stop.  We woke up to the pouring rain and a few dashed plans — no bike rides for us on Sunday — but packed up and salvaged the morning with a little breakfast at Barbara Fritchie, a place that, really, there is just no way to describe… if you’re in the Frederick area, it’s worth the experience.

Of course, if you do ever find yourself there, you might also find yourself cursing us for our inexplicable love of this little blast from the past… and truly, I’m sorry for that… but we just think the Fritch is awesome.

Quiet Sundays

Friday Link Love

rylee hitchner paris wedding

Is it Friday already?

No really, I mean that.  I know it’s blasphemy… but my weeks have been flying by.  It really is hard to believe that another one is gone…

Not that I’m complaining.  Friday means we’re going camping, and since my love of toasty marshmallows knows no bounds, I can barely contain my excitement.  It should be nice to escape, turn off the phone, the computer, and take a deep breath.  Goodness knows I need it.

What are you up to this late summer weekend?  Big plans, or just planning to take a moment to relax?

Here are a few things I’m loving this week…

Every single detail of this inspiring Paris wedding.

These gorgeous calligraphy Photoshop brushes.

This super pretty hair tutorial.

Kylee’s tips for better Instagram photos, I need to up my game!

Pretty statement necklaces.

Day 195.

Pretty lingerie.
