Summer is here! // $100 Anthropologie giveaway

summer giveaway // a thousand threads
Living on the east coast has definitely changed my perspective on a few things: public transportation, the meaning of the words ‘custard’ and ‘barbeque,’ and maybe most of all, Memorial Day.

Sure, it’s a big deal everywhere, but on the east coast Memorial Day weekend isn’t just the beginning of summer — it’s the beginning of pool season. Sometimes it’s been hot for months, but no matter, the pools stay closed. After all, it’s still spring – even if it is 95 degrees. And partly for this reason, because we have such staunch cut-off dates, summer never seems to last long enough… which makes it, and our short pool season, even more special.

So this year, because I’m so excited about so many things, I thought we should celebrate the beginning of summer – and more importantly, pool season – with a little giveaway!

Because now that we’re all allowed to get in the water, naturally we need a new bathing suit to mark the occasion.

Of course you can spend the money on anything you like. Maybe you live somewhere where you feel slightly less like a slave to the seasons… I bet it’s glorious. In that case you can buy yourself a pretty dress or a lovely new pair of sunglasses, or maybe even something for your home. The options here are endless.

So enter now using the Rafflecopter below, there are lots of chances to win! The contest will end next Thursday at 11:59pm and we’ll announce the winner the next day.

Good luck, and happy summer! I’ll see you at the pool.

Unfortunately this contest is open to US residents only, I’m sorry if that leaves you out!

Small business diaries // Starting a cottage home food business

// starting a cottage home food business
First, I just have to say thank you all again for your support. This is such an amazing/exciting/terrifying time in our lives and it really does mean so much to have you all cheering us on. It gives us the strength we need on those nights when we’re still baking at four in the morning and those mornings when we just don’t want to get out of bed, and it’s huge. So thank you so, so much. You might not know it, but you really are an incredibly important part of our little lives.

But before I get too mushy (more than I already have) let’s get down to business. Since I haven’t been able to share our journey with you over these past two years, we have a whole lot of catching up to do! Starting with this very important piece. Dough Uprising started with a dream (literally, but that’s a story for another day) but I’m not sure if that dream would have become a reality without the cottage home food industry. It certainly wouldn’t have helped our cause.

In the beginning, we had a name and an idea, but no clue how to put it all into action. We didn’t have much money, so we knew that we needed to start small. We thought of selling at farmer’s markets, and thought that maybe we could license our own kitchen with a few adjustments, but not so much.

In Maryland it’s very tough to have a home kitchen licensed, since it has to be removed from the rest of the house. Basements and guest houses are awesome, but for those of us who live in basement-less townhomes the options are few. Thank goodness for this one little exception.

In ours and in many other states across the country, cottage food laws exist that allow small food businesses to work out of their home kitchen under strict regulations. Prior to getting started with Dough Uprising, we’d never heard of these laws, but learning about them changed our lives.

Different states have different rules and unfortunately, at this time, some places still don’t have these laws at all (you can look up your state’s specifics here), but if you’re thinking about starting your own cottage home food business, these are a few of the more general restrictions you’ll find…

52 dates // 20

52 dates // a thousand threads
The date // A glass of prosecco and a very, very long nap.

After a marathon evening of baking and a fantastic first Sunday at the market, Mark and I celebrated with a bottle of prosecco given to us by the sweetest friends, then laid down for what was meant to be a quick catch-up of a nap…

We woke up the next morning.

Okay so marathon might even be an understatement, Saturday was a really long night… we’re still working on getting a system down for pumping out loads of pies in a little home kitchen, and we had a lot of last-minute prep to do for our first day, but the good news is that now I think we should be set. Our signs are painted, our labels are printed, and we learned a ton that should help us move much faster next week.

And hey, after oh, say 14 hours of sleep, I don’t remember the last time I felt so rested… what’s better than that?

Happy Monday! Thank you all so so much for your support on our announcement last week, we’re so excited to be able to share our journey and our dreams with all of you.

Now tell me — how was your weekend?

Introducing // Dough Uprising

introducing: dough uprising // a thousand threads
I’ve been waiting for this moment for a very long time, you guys, but now that it’s here I can barely find the words… I couldn’t be happier to introduce you to our little labor of love.

Dough Uprising isn’t a bakery: it’s a revolution. And we’re ready to take over the world — or at least our little corner of it.

Our official launch is this Sunday at the Urbana Library Farmer’s Market here in Frederick, and I hope if you’re in the area you’ll come by!

Our ingredients are sourced locally and all of our products are made entirely by hand. We’ll have whole pies, hand pies, and baguettes to start the weekend, and it won’t be long before we add pasticiotti and cold brew to the mix.

Even if you can’t come visit us (and I so wish you all could!) I hope you’ll come join us on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

We’ll be updating regularly, but we promise to keep the propaganda to a minimum. And keep an eye out for the official launch of our website coming any day!

We can’t even begin to contain our excitement at finally getting this business plan — that began (literally) with a dream more than two years ago — off the ground. I’m so thankful for all of the support we’ve had along the way, from friends who are surely tired of tasting pie to family who’ve believed so generously in our dreams to all of you who’ve waited so patiently as I’ve hinted at this plan relentlessly for who knows how long.

It’s just the beginning of this little project of ours, but just getting here feels like such a success. I can’t imagine feeling happier or more hopeful than I do right now.

Click through to see a few more shots of our process and pies (we had so much fun with this shoot!) …

Handmade pizza with spring onions, prosciutto, balsamic, and egg

handmade pizza with spring onions, prosciutto, balsamic, and egg // a thousand threads
If something is already delicious, chances are it can be improved by the presence of an egg. Burgers, fried rice, ham & cheese sandwiches, sweet potatoes… probably not oatmeal or chocolate cake, but certainly pizza, with one caveat. Those eggs are slippery little buggers.

I’m not going to say that every recipe attempt goes well in our house… this pizza dough is the result of trial and error dating back to the beginning of our relationship. There’ve been hard pizzas, soft pizzas, too-thick pizzas, too-healthy pizzas, and a little bit of everything in between. Most have been pretty decent… but not like this one. This is the one that goes in the vault.

I have to hand it to that bread-baking husband of mine for cracking the code, the pizza is truly delicious and better than anything I’ve ever had at home — but that’s just the beginning of this story. This story is about eggs.

52 dates // 19

// 52 dates // a thousand threads
The date // Mother’s Day dinner at the Wine Kitchen.
The food // Tuna tartar tacos, fresh herb rolls, fried green tomatoes, cheesesteak fries and a french dip sandwich (we shared a little bit of it all).
The wine // A bottle of Sledgehammer Cabernet, Peter Gabriel would be proud.

As a stepmom, I’m never quite sure what to do with Mother’s Day. It’s not the same kind of huge celebration, but it’s certainly not nothing, either, and while I don’t feel like I can demand any big hoopla, it really is nice to be recognized in some small way.

Luckily, Mark always knows just what to do to make me feel special. This year, even though with so much going on I was sure we wouldn’t go out, he surprised me with dinner at our favorite place. We sat outside on a night that felt more like summer than spring, made plans for the future, and smiled at how smart that little boy we’re raising is and how big he’s become.

We savored the special occasion, and my awkwardness melted away. We might be a less traditional family, but we’re a strong and happy one too, and I wouldn’t trade what we have for all the traditional days in the world.

My summer makeup routine

my summer makeup routine // a thousand threads
Even though I’m not the biggest fan of the cold, I do love the dramatic way the seasons change, all wild and wooly, with summer rushing in in the blink of an eye… and I love the pomp and circumstance that comes along with the shift.

I love putting away my sweaters and scarves, only to discover them, like new, when the seasons change again. I love moving from spice and quintessential comfort food in the winter to sweet, bright and fresh meals in the spring. And I love changing up my makeup routine… because, for me, the coming of summer means greeting a fresher and easier way of life. Maybe that’s because I work in Washington where things always seem to slow down (even when we say that they don’t) or maybe because the warm weather just makes everything move a little bit slower.

Whatever it is, I look forward to it every year.

So I thought I’d share my summer makeup routine today to start to will in the transition, because if there’s anything I’m ready for now… it’s definitely my summer skin (even if the tan I’ll surely be proud of is only a slightly darker shade of pale). I partnered with bareMinerals to share my routine because I’ve used their products for years, and love them both for the way they feel on my face and the totally natural look that they have. There’s nothing better when you want a little bit of a pared down look, and that’s just what I want when the weather gets warm.

So here we go. I won’t claim to be an expert, and I’d try to be all cool and pretend I don’t need anything to cover up my naked face, but as you’ll see below, I totally do…

Easy DIY stone planter

easy diy stone planter // a thousand threads
There’s no denying that I have a black thumb. Generally, only cacti are strong enough to withstand my horrible wrath. So I usually rely on Mark to keep our plants alive, including our annual tomato growth that grew up so healthy and strong last year that it took over the whole entry to our house. We (because even if I don’t do the work I definitely still take the credit) were so proud.

So, bolstered by our success, this year we’ve decided to take on two tomato plants. But that meant that we needed a new planter, and those things can be super expensive, especially if you want something nice. So we decided to get a little creative.

Mark brought home 4 pieces of stone and a caulking gun and we went to work gluing those babies together, just hoping that our little experiment wouldn’t fall apart as soon as we put in the soil.

Happily though, the result was as strong as can be — good looking too! And it was such an easy project, I’m already dreaming up even more diy planters for our home. Inside, outside, I’m so in love with this one I just might have to do it all!

Follow along below for instructions on how to make your own. You can use any stone, any size, just as long as they all fit together, and the process is easy as can be…
