blood orange gin fizz // a thousand threads
It’s a food-heavy week here on A Thousand Threads, but that’s how we like it (any excuse for a little extra snack is a good one in my book). Head on over to Simple & Crisp now for my interview and the recipes for these three simple pairings — including the very tasty blood orange gin fizz shown above.

Thank you, Simple & Crisp, for the lovely feature! I was so flattered to be asked.

Homemade almond butter

homemade almond butter // a thousand threads
Sometimes you don’t have the time or the energy for the whole shebang — and sometimes a bowl of cereal for dinner just sounds really, really good. I believe wholeheartedly in those times. (And in cereal for dinner, for that matter…) But when the cereal isn’t quite cutting it, this is one of the most common snacks we break out. Crusty bread, sliced apples, and a little bit of almond butter go a long way to satisfy a busy appetite — and I think they might be even just a little bit healthy too. Especially if the almond butter is homemade, a process that’s a whole lot easier than you might think…

52 dates // 11

52 dates // a thousand threads
The date // Pickling eggs.
The place // Home in the snow!
The reason // Stir crazy taken to a whole new level… oh, and St. Patrick’s Day, right?

Here we are, inside again in the snow! But making the best of it by pickling our little beet-red hearts out…

Pi Friday

// a thousand threads
I know I’ve only just come back, but I’m already dreaming of the next vacation. Sweet summer road trips and days near the water… the best time of year is on its way and I couldn’t be more ready. This weekend, however, I will not be taking any road trips, or sunning myself on any beaches – I’ll just be dreaming away, making plans.

How about you? Do you have any big plans for this summer?

So far we mostly have dreams, and have yet to firm anything up, but we do plan to take a few nice long weekends away. Happy pi day! And happy pie in the sky, whatever you might be dreaming about. Here’s to making them all come true.

/////

Eye this beautiful home, film and interview.

Buy some new (on sale) sunnies for spring.

Make a lovely get-together for friends.

Bake a pie, of course — it’s pi day! Then go to sleep, wake up and bake this crispy coconut french toast with sour cherries and chocolate.

/////

IKEA’s new PS collection looks kind of amazing.

You’ve probably already seen this Zach Galifianakis interview with President Obama — but just in case.

This cake is insane.

Dare to…

Planning our trip with Bing Rewards

planning our trip to new orleans // a thousand threads
I do research for a living, so you probably won’t be surprised to learn that when it comes to vacations (and nearly every other new experience) I approach planning with a level of systematic compulsion few are capable of. And once the trip is underway, that doesn’t mean the research ends. One has to wonder how I ever could’ve lived in a pre-smartphone world. But the benefits just keep getting better for obsessive knowledge-seekers like me, because now a girl can find herself the proud owner of a shiny new Sephora gift card just by doing what she was already going to do — by Bing-ing the heck out of each and every little thing she wants to know.

And let me tell you, I made a dent in that gift card on this trip — but it definitely paid off in way more ways than one. My searches led us to amazing meals, places, and answers when we were lost.

Keep reading to hear about some of our absolute favorite new places we found while in New Orleans (and the best shrimp & grits on earth) all while earning Bing Rewards

New Orleans

new orleans // a thousand threads
There are a lot of things you might say about New Orleans.

You might say it’s the most beautiful city you’ve ever seen, or the dirtiest, or that the food is beyond compare. You might say all of those things and, in some sense, when you did they would all be true. New Orleans is filled with gorgeous architecture weathered by hard summers and age, locals with a sense of humor strong enough to keep the city’s storied history of voodoo and ghosts alive and well (one apartment we saw for rent touted its apparitions as a key feature) and food so good you might find yourself sighing and carrying on to strangers for weeks on end.

Every time I visit I’m reminded that the city has more character wrapped up in one block than most can lay claim to at all. Voodoo, jazz, creole, and people that know how to party like nobody else (and can do it just about anywhere thanks to such lax drinking laws) are just a few of the things that make New Orleans stand out above the rest. But they’re just the tip of the iceberg…

The last gasps of winter

the last gasps of winter // a thousand threads
God willing, this will be the last time you see me in such a heavy coat and scarf this year. The snow has almost melted and we’re just going to go ahead and ignore tomorrow’s forecast for 30 degrees, because today things are looking up.

It’s just a matter of time before we’re all in our bathing suits by the pool.

Which reminds me, now that vacation is over, I should probably start eating something other than bacon pralines, beignets, and creamy grits…

Do you do anything to spring clean your diet, or do you laugh in the face of that two piece that’s on its way? (Actually if you do I don’t want to hear it. Tell me your tips!)

52 dates // 10

52 dates // a thousand threads
The date // A quiet night in with the first few episodes of House of Cards.
The snacks // Popcorn, of course.

We’re settling back in with a slightly shorter weekend than we’d planned and a ton to catch up on before we both head back to work. So we thought we’d take it easy this week and cuddle up on the couch together for a date night in.

I’ve been slowly planting the subliminal seeds begging Mark to give in and watch House of Cards with me for a while now, so when the time came to pick a show he knew what he had to do.

He’ll thank me later, right?

I maintain that the unwanted obsession with this new show will result in hours of joy and intrigue we absolutely could not have replaced with productivity…

Or something. In any case, it’s really good so far.

Citrus hot pot home scent

citrus hot pot home scent // a thousand threads
After a long, cold winter stuck inside, the house feels so stuffy — I long to open up the windows and let in the fresh air. But when it’s still around 20 degrees, there’s no other option but to find another way to make the air feel fresh.

This citrus boil is the perfect solution.
