Decorative Gourd Season

a stockholm apartment, a rabbit hook, a diy pressed flower tray, and ginger pear hand pies
This weekend I’m looking forward to canning with Kinfolk, baking an exceedingly large number of apples, and maybe even squeezing in a crisp autumn hike with a gallon of cider and rum. Who knows, I might even throw on a flannel shirt, some tattered overalls, and a floppy fucking hat and stand in the middle of a cornfield for a few days. (This is still just so brilliant.)

I’m sorry, but when you live somewhere that scorches the hell out of you in the summer, freezes your face off in the winter, and stuffs your nose in the spring, it’s painful, but you have to come to accept it at some point. Fall is all you have.

So go ahead, pull out your sweater, wrap your face in a scarf and go gorge on some sweet, shameful pumpkin spice… you know you want to just as much as me.

Now quick — tell me about your fall plans!

P.S. I’m sharing my favorite fall cocktail over on the Birchbox blog today. Maybe you should have one or five. Then I can guarantee you’ll fall for fall.

Eye this gorgeous Stockholm apartment.

Buy this awesome rabbit wall hook.

Make this brilliant diy pressed flower tray.

Bake these adorable ginger pear hand pies.

A mug to celebrate the season. (Decorative gourd season, that is.)

Louis C.K. is brilliant.

What makes good writing?

The moment that changes your life.

Chipotle might be bragging a little too much.

I’m guessing you might have already seen this, but just in case.

Portraits from the National Beard and Mustache Championships

I’m loving these crazy portraits from the National Beard and Mustache Championships so much I had to share. Right now Mark is dumbfounded at how the guy with the ‘stache could have possibly grown it so long. His has been growing for months, MONTHS, and it’s barely half an inch. What’s a guy to do?!

Oh well, one day…

Maybe this Movember.

Our progressive dinner party + how to plan one of your own!

progressive dinner party / a thousand threadsprogressive dinner party / a thousand threads
Progressive dinner parties are one of the most brilliant little ideas I’ve come across in a long time – have you heard of them? The idea is that rather than have just one party in one place, you gather a few of your favorite people and have each course at a different home. That way the party moves around, and everyone has a chance to do a little bit of hosting!

Thanks to The Neighborhood (who hosted this awesome contest at Alt NYC) — and my super amazing neighbors — Mark and I had the chance to throw our own little progressive dinner party to ring in the fall.

A Quick Trip to NYC

It was just a short trip to New York this weekend, but we made sure we fit in as much as we could.

… and by as much as we could, of course I mean food.

The Little Things

a cute film from Garance, a parka with a leather hood, diy decor, and carrot cake
We’re off on a quick trip to New York this weekend to catch my parents during a three hour layover on their (very first ever) trip to Europe. When you live on opposite sides of the country, a few hours is more than enough to justify a little road trip. And besides, without us driving up, how would they ever get a pastrami sandwich and a piece of cheesecake to remind them of New York? They wouldn’t… they’d just have a sad airport dinner… in Newark.

Nobody wants that.

Any recommendations to pass along for their great big trip to Norway, the Netherlands, France, Italy… everywhere else (how jealous am I)? I’m so excited for them to experience everything that Europe has to offer, and desperate to go back myself!

Eye this adorable film from Garance — otherwise known as the cutest way to announce a haircut ever.

Buy this awesome parka with a leather hood — it’s all boots and coats on my wish list all of a sudden, hello fall.

Make this little concrete diamond (can someone make this for me? like now?).

Bake a carrot cake — one of my favorites, and this one is so pretty.

This was pretty much my dream as a kid.

A frustrating list, and an even more frustrating rebuttal.

A lesson I need.

Oooh Etsy pages

Wanting this for my office.

Live // Simply

This sweet little home didn’t need much to make it special. With colorful tiles, white walls, wood floors, and enough windows and doors to let in every last drop of LA sun, it had a little bit of a head start in the perfection department. But what I really love about this home is that its residents have chosen to keep it so simple, with fresh flowers over fancy knickknacks and a collection of meaningful pieces that remind them of where they’ve been…

Optimize your pictures for the web

how to optimize your pictures for the web / a thousand threads
Hey bloggers and creatives, do you optimize your pictures before putting them on the web? I’m guessing you do. But if you have no idea what I’m talking about (because until yesterday, I was with you…) then do I have some news that will blow your mind.

For months (years) now I’ve been struggling with an irritating grey tone… one that wouldn’t show up on my laptop, but damnit if it didn’t show up every single time I pinned something I’d posted. I thought it was something in my editing, maybe my screen (I needed a desktop, desktops are always better for photo editing!)… or what if it was the light, the shot itself? I was one step away from an asylum when I came across this article on the Alt Blog.

I thought, “Huh, what is this “save for the web” thing? Maybe I should try it out…”

And then, as Emeril would say

But tell me now, is this one of those super simple things I was already supposed to know? Or are you with me? Because I’m feeling a little silly for all of these years of un-optimized, sad, grey little photos like the one on the top left.
