Pendleton’s Portland Collection

Can you tell I have Oregon on the brain this week? Pendleton and I have been friendly for as long as I can remember – even today there’s a Pendleton blanket on my bed – but besides a couple of pretty sweet vintage reversible skirts and a flannel or two I’ve never flocked to Pendleton’s clothing line… until now.

Well okay it’s been a few years of amazing now since the start of the Portland Collection, but every year just keeps getting better and better…

The Five Things I Remember From My Wedding Day

the five things i remember from my wedding day / a thousand threads
Later this week, Mark and I are off to Oregon for one of my best and oldest friends’ weddings.  I’m full of emotion over the trip, not just because I get to go home, but also because I couldn’t be happier to see this lady I love marry a guy who I know will be good to her.  She deserves it more than anyone I know.

So, in the middle of all of this emotion and talking to her about her wedding, particularly the ceremony, I got to thinking about my own day (we just recently passed our six month anniversary by the way!) and realized that these are the five things I remember most…

Happy Mother’s Day!

happy mother's day / a thousand threads
To my beautiful mom, my best friend.  Thank you for being there for me always.

I’m a lucky girl to have you to look up to.

And to all of the moms out there, have a happy Mother’s Day!  I hope you were able to talk someone into bringing you breakfast in bed.

Gatsby Love?

friday love / a thousand threads
So we’re all having a big fat Gatsby party this weekend, ya?

I have to admit that I’m practically already running to see the movie – Baz Luhrmann has been my #1 since the days of Romeo and sunscreen, so I’d run to almost anything new, but add in the glitz and glamour of the roaring 20s set against a soundtrack of Jay-Z, Gotye, and Lana Del Rey — I’m so in. I’m still a geeky theater kid at heart and the whole big show of it all just kills me.

What do you think? Are you as excited as I am? Or do you side with Mark who just happens to hate both Baz Luhrmann AND Leonardo DiCaprio (poor guy… it’s a one-two punch, this one, but he’s too sweet on me not to go.)

Whatever you’re up to, have an amazing weekend and a happy Mother’s Day!

Here are a few more things I’m loving this week…

Eye Rue’s Pacific Northwest issue, which is making me even more homesick than usual.

Buy these cute kitchen decals.

Make this DIY keepsake stationery chest.

Bake this brilliant little single serving deep dish apple pie.

Why are women DIY entrepreneurs called ‘hobbyists’?

This reaction to Joel Stein’s Time article on “me me me” millennials.

Rhubarb floats and boozy rum horchata.

You mean my egg white delight is still bad for me?

Lunchtime dance parties!

Jennifer Lawrence.

Daughter’s cover of “Get Lucky.”

24 people who are really nailing this parenting thing.

I guess I’m mentally ill.

The Best Mother’s Day Ever // Breakfast in Bed (And Banana-Walnut Pancakes)

banana walnut pancakes / a thousand threads
I’m not going to say that I would mind a sweet new pair of sunglasses, maybe that bathing suit I’ve been coveting… but on Mother’s Day, really, all a lady wants is to feel the love.

As a kid I would make my mom breakfast in bed (and she was always very sweet to stay there – in bed – pretending she was still asleep until I drug my lazy butt into the kitchen and up to her room).

I can’t imagine how the food must have tasted. I commend her now for choking it down. But on those mornings she would ooh and aww and make me feel special just for making her feel special, and it was always a good start to the day.

Breaking the Rules

white shoes and slouchy jeans
Just in case you’re still feeling a little weird about this whole white shoes before Memorial Day thing (not that you would… we don’t really hold any of those old-fashioned fashion rules sacred anymore, do we? … okay I did too) you should know that it is currently illegal to sell beer and pretzels at the same time in North Dakota; get a fish drunk in Ohio; or wear a silly fake mustache to church in Alabama.

There — isn’t that better?  Now go mix some black with some brown and slap on a little black dress for your next summer wedding…

For shoes as good as this, it’s worth a little side-eye from the grandma at the grocery store.

(Or was that for wearing heels to the grocery store?

I guess we’ll never know…)

Live // Top 5 Green Modular Homes
(OR The Sexiest Mobile Homes You’ll Ever See)

marmol radziner prefab moab utahmarmol radziner prefab moab utah
Lately, Mark and I have been dreaming about buying a little piece of land and putting up a prefab home.

But don’t mistake what we mean by “prefab,” the days of the double wide are long gone.  Not that there’s anything wrong with a double wide — actually I spent my first few years in existence in one while my parents built our house.  Sometimes there’s nothing better, because a few years spent in something less than ideal can eventually yield your dream home.  But the thing is, these days you really don’t have to settle for anything less than ideal.  In fact, you can get a pretty good start on a dream home right now for around $100-$150k.  Of course, it’s easy to spend a whole lot more (see above) but the options are out there.  Tons of them.

These are a few of our favorite green modular homes that run anywhere from tens to hundreds of thousands… there really is something for every budget.

Now to find that perfect piece of land…

Hello Friday

friday link love / a thousand threads
Oh, Friday — thank you for being here!  I really needed you this week.  And I’m looking forward to a bright sunny weekend full of Cinco de Mayo and Derby celebrations — the icing on the cake!

Plus who knows, maybe we’ll have the first female Derby winner soon!  That would certainly be a milestone to celebrate.

In a world that has grown so much, it’s hard to think that there are still a few holdouts out there that believe women just can’t compete… or just want to hear the kissing noise.  The ladies should stick to the big hats and the juleps, amiright?  (Really though, I love me a fancy Derby hat, but when I googled “woman AND kentucky derby” this was my top result.  I’m rooting for you Rosie.)

How about you?  Will you tune in to the Derby this weekend?

Here are a few of my favorites this week…

Eye this handmade shoe collection, Olive Thomas, via Miss Moss.

Buy wrap bracelets – lots of wrap bracelets – for summer.

Make these watercolor escort cards.

Bake this white chocolate and walnut cake.

He was hilarious, but Obama wasn’t joking at the White House correspondents’ dinner.

This dad’s letter to his little girl about her future husband.

I have mixed feelings about a Downton Abbey fashion line, but I’m listening…

Social networks and body image… an interesting debate.

These cheap sunglasses.

How to set up a Facebook ad for your business.

5 tips for how to survive working for the man.

A Strawberry Rhubarb Margarita for Cinco de Mayo

strawberry rhubarb margarita
What’s the measure of a really good man? At the end of a long day, he’ll make you a kickass margarita — and before you even get home, he’ll set everything up and take pictures of it for your blog.  THEN — after you get home and he’s just about to sit down, finally, and relax — and because you’re just a little crazy — he’ll calmly agree to take even more shots… because you have an unexplained but obsessive need to get that one little detail right.  Oh, the patience!

It’s a good one I have on my hands, you guys.

… and we won’t even start on the margarita. I really can’t think of anything better for Cinco de Mayo than this sweet, tart, tasty concoction — I mean it epitomizes spring, does it not? And since the process involves making a fresh batch of rhubarb simple syrup that will keep in the fridge, we’ll be drinking these guys all weekend.

Do you have any big plans for the 5th of May? Any excuse to cook up a little Mexican food and break out the margaritas is a good one in this west coast lady’s book. Goodness I miss that food, go out and have some for me if you’re lucky enough to live where it’s right! Sorry east coasters, your Italian food is better — at least you have that.
