I have bangs! They came with the fall and the sweaters and the flannel sheets.
… finally.
Oh guys… it’s appropriate that I would share my schedule this week, because it feels like I’ve barely come up for air. Work has been extra busy, with extra errands piled on top, and every night it seems I’m walking through the door just to head off to sleep. I’m looking forward to one extra day this weekend (thanks Columbus Day) to unwind and catch up.
How about you? Do you have Columbus Day off? I know it’s not the most common long weekend.
Eye this festive fall desktop wallpaper.
Buy these Retro Print Revival lamps.
Make your own dried herbs.
Bake these salted honey rice krispies treats.
Homemade pumpkin pasta.
Since I run this blog and work a full-time job, I get asked a lot about my schedule, work-life balance, and how I fit it all in.
I also get asked a lot about my commute, which is about an hour and a half each way, split between a short drive and a slightly longer train ride (although when the traffic feels the need to reach out and ruin my day, that short drive can easily become a whole lot longer…).
I won’t lie and say its easy, but I’m also the kind of person who thrives on being busy… so I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Here’s what my schedule looks like day to day…
///// Monday /////
I’m lucky right now to work a flex schedule that allows me to condense my work week into four 10-hour days. That doesn’t mean I’m not available for phone calls or even the occasional assignment on my day off (Monday) but it does mean that at least I can do it from home, which saves me about 3 hours of round-trip commuting time to DC.
Frosty beer, pumpkins, and power tools – because what else do you do when it’s 80 degrees in October?
So I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but here on the east coast, summer’s been sticking around. The heat, humidity, and summer storms we all felt so lucky to miss out on in August have decided to swoop in and take over our fall.
And while it’s sticky and sweaty totally unfair… I can’t really complain.
Nothing is worse than the cold… and in this house, anything that wards it off just a little bit longer is welcome, even if it does mean the hot apple cider will have to stay on the shelf.
I’ll just kill the pain with a few more of these tasty end-of-summer tomatoes (we still have so many from our garden!).
These past few weeks in DC have my head spinning, so right now I’m feeling pretty ready to spend a few days at home (especially since it looks like this whole ‘summer in October’ thing is going to continue). Watch a happy movie, clear some debris (it’s our neighborhood garage sale this week), maybe even start to get that bedroom in order…
You never know. My favorite kind of weekend is always the weekend with the freedom to see where it takes me.
What about you? Do you have any big plans?
Eye this lovely bedroom inspiration and even lovelier words to inspire your fall goals… it’s so easy to forget to take some time for yourself.
Buy these amazing coast coasters.
Make this diy pegboard headboard (I’m not sure when or where it’s from but it’s fantastic… any idea?).
Bake some harvest caramel corn.
When to drink coffee and when to drink beer.
An unbelievably beautiful vow renewal on the fjords of Norway, paired with an even more beautiful story.
That’s one way to deal with the fear of waking your kid up when you sneak in the room.
David Bowie’s 100 must-read books.
I do this every time… I get seduced by the perfect bangs that others (ahem… Alexa) are somehow able to pull off and I think hey, maybe I can do it too! I’ve already got the side bangs…
Misguided thoughts? What do we think? Should I go for it?
Bangs or no bangs.
You might remember that I shared this fall cocktail over on the Birchbox Blog last week, but Mark and I also shot a little bonus video that wasn’t included.
It’s just a little fun — we’re still learning the ropes of this whole video thing — but I figured that come Wednesday, we all start to feel like we need a cocktail. Maybe this is the one you should try!
You can find the recipe for the Stone Wall here. (It’s one of my favorites!)
I already live pretty far from the city, but in my dreams (in a world where commuting is a thing of the past) I’d love to be able to move even farther out… somewhere like this idyllic little farm where I spent my Saturday canning and celebrating the changing season with a group of new friends.
If you’re familiar with Kinfolk or with Rebecca’s blog, you’re probably not surprised that the event was beautiful (read: perfect in every way) but even more than that, it was a joy to attend.
I want to remember…
1 // Taking the long way home from Raleigh to watch the sun set over the Shenandoah Mountains.
2 // Sharing hot pastrami and cheesecake with my parents on a makeshift concrete picnic table (otherwise known as a sidewalk) in Newark. My parents and a flock of pushy pigeons…
3 // The best little progressive dinner party ever, with some of my favorite friends.
4 // Hearing that two of my favorite people in the whole wide world are engaged.
5 // Coming home to the sweetest little concrete diamond… Mark said I asked, so he did. (Where did I find this wonderful man?)
I’m looking forward to…
1 // Halloween decorating, hot cider, falling leaves… all the good things.
2 // Celebrating Mark’s birthday (and very soon after that, our first anniversary)!
3 // Getting a little more organized… fall always feels like a good time to purge and start again.
4 // Using this little program to up my writing productivity, and filing away a few more bits and pieces that might one day, by some stroke of luck, become a book.
5 // I hope – maybe, don’t quote me on this one – finishing off our bedroom. Then at least one room in the house will be done (and then I can share!).
