Thank you, Thank you, Thank you

a house filled with flowers, clare elsaesser prints, a diy kitchen island, & cheater banana pudding
I’m not sure where to begin — my heart is so full of thanks for all of you. Thank you for your responses, for your feedback, for your love, your support, your friendship… for everything you’re able to give from so far away, behind the curtain that lies between us, but lets in so much light… thank you.

I’m having the best time reading through your responses, taking notes, making plans, finding a little more confidence in the direction I’m hoping to go, knowing you’re all by my side. I don’t mean to be so flowery, but hey, it’s a holiday Friday… I’m feeling pretty full of fluff.

Tell me. Are you going away for the big weekend? Maybe taking advantage of these last days of summer with a cookout? Whatever it is you’re up to, I hope it’s wonderful! Enjoy your holiday and I’ll see you back here on Tuesday.

P.S. If you haven’t had a chance to respond to yesterday’s survey, no problem at all! I’ll be keeping an eye on it over the next few weeks. We’re in this together. I want everyone who can to have a chance to weigh in.

Eye this pretty house filled with flowers.

Buy a Clare Elsaesser print (I want them all.)

Make your own faux butcher block island.

Bake this cheater banana pudding.

I don’t usually get so worked up over the tech-obsessed-culture stuff… but this short film made me sad.

Haven’t quite decided how I feel about the fact that this post kind of makes me like Selena Gomez.

One Fantastic Year

survey / a thousand threads
The end of 2013 is still a few months away, but for some reason I’ve always felt like fall was the real new beginning. It’s something about the start of a new school year, the return of the shows… everybody settles back in for a new start.

So this August, rather than share 5 things I have in store, I thought I might check in with you.

Your feedback makes a huge difference in the decisions I make for the future of A Thousand Threads. So if you have just a few minutes (I promise it’s short) I’d love it if you’d do me a huge favor and let me know how you’re feeling. After all, you’re the ones who matter. I couldn’t run this little blog on my own.

What’s Your Take on Millennials?

wonder, bravery, hope
These days it seems like everywhere you look, somebody else is throwing their hat in the “what are these crazy kids all about” ring. Some of the analysis is pretty good, amazing even. Some, well… maybe not so much.

So I’m curious. What’s your take? Are you a millennial? (Early 80s to 2000 babies, I’m calling your name.)

Or are you on the outside looking in… maybe shaking your head at the narcissistic, tech-obsessed, jobless culture that young folks are faced with today?

Back to School Night

black pencil skirt / a thousand threads
I refuse to believe that the summer is almost over — how is it already time to go back to school?

The sun is still shining, the tomatoes are still growing…

But apparently the schools don’t care what I think, because Austin has been back in for a week (a week!) and last night we had the chance to meet his new second grade teacher, see his classroom (2nd grade!) and — because why not? — take a few pictures next to this very cool little barn…

Pisco Sour

pisco sour / a thousand threads
Mark and I officially discovered the Pisco Sour on our honeymoon in Peru, and were immediately hooked.

We’d heard of the drink before, but since pisco isn’t all that common in the U.S., we’d never had one — and beyond the name, we pretty much had no idea what we were getting into.

Pisco is made with grapes, like a brandy, but to me, it tastes more like a tequila. In fact my first thought on the sour was that it tasted a little bit like a frothy margarita.

That is, until it knocked me on my ass.

Turns out, a Pisco Sour is more akin to a martini than a margarita in that it’s nearly all alcohol. The difference is that you’d never know.

Scheduling Some Free Time

the best to eye, to buy, to make, and to bake / a thousand threads
I’ve only just recently learned that everyone isn’t this way (I’m still not quite sure I believe it…) but for me, a busy social life usually means that I’m going to get to a point where I need a few days at home alone to recharge (extroverts — no?).

So after a few busy weeks months, there came a… let’s just say a moment, that sounds way better than breakdown… a few weeks ago when I found myself at a place where I needed to say enough was enough. We had to find some time to refuel. To unwind and do nothing. So, because right now our lives are just that busy – and even the weekends where we really meant to relax… we did anything but – we decided to schedule it…

So here we go. Let the laziness begin. I’m not going to feel guilty… I’m not going to make a list… I’m going to actively soak up as much of this last of only two remaining pool weekends we have before that dastardly cold shows up again and ruins it all.

Sometimes you just have to force a good thing, and that’s okay… because it’s going to feel so good.

Hope you have a good weekend! I’ll try to also unplug as much as I can… but on that front, I’m not sure I have any promises. Maybe I’ll see you over on Instagram.

Eye some good advice.

Buy this sweater that I’m dying — dying I tell you — to have.

Make this pretty pegboard.

Bake this citrus polenta breakfast cake.

22 past and present “Saturday Night Live” cast members talk about their audition. Classic line: “If you went and got ice, you would hear snippets of auditions. Everybody else’s stuff sounds better than yours.” I think we all feel that way every once in a while.

Just so amazing, these penguin sounds… I die.

What should you do with your life? Take your pick.

I will always love you, Dolly!

This “Get Your Sh*t Together” series is really, really good.

A Tree Grows in Harrisburg

leather jacket and jeans / a thousand threads
Sunday night, Mark and I drove up to Harrisburg to see Spirit Family Reunion and Black Prairie. Harrisburg isn’t far from where we live, but I’ve never been, so I was excited to have the chance to wander around the city a little before the show.

Of course, everything doesn’t always work out as planned. When we arrived early we realized pretty quick that the whole ‘wander around the city’ thing wasn’t going to happen. We were pretty far from downtown, with nothing much in sight but a brewery (our destination) a few vacant buildings, and one little tree on a roof.

(A tree on a roof?)

So you’re engaged, now what?

so you're engaged, now what? / a thousand threads
1 // DON’T PANIC.

I know you’re so excited, and you should be, but don’t run out and start booking your vendors right away. You’re going to want to get your bearings first, create a plan… you can’t do anything until you’ve got a guest list and a venue anyway. So sit back, relax, have a glass of wine with your new fiancé. You have time.

Maryland Crab Cakes with Spicy Jalapeno Slaw

maryland crab cakes / a thousand threads
Nothing says summer in Maryland like the smell of Old Bay and a really killer crab cake… and I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say that Mark’s recipe is the BEST. Hands down.

… in fact I’m pretty sure he’s still mourning that fact that he’s giving it up.

This is the first time he’s shared…

A Thousand Miles // The Long and Winding Road

training for a marathon / a thousand threads
One-Mile Pace: 7:50
Long Run: No long run this week.
Weekly Mileage: 17 Miles

I’m still learning that marathon training is never the straight path I feel it’s supposed to be… life happens, and you have to adjust accordingly. But adjusting always drives me crazy. The little naysayers in my head take over and I start to worry that I won’t make it back.

Whether I like it or not, though, here I am. After a few busy weeks and a bit of a detour, I’m ready to get back on the road… and working to overcome the nagging feeling that I can’t.

Three weeks of no distance means that right now I’m running shorter distances more days and working back up to my regular weekly mileage. 17 this week, 20 next. Soon I’ll take the plunge back into a long run, and then it’s on to the finish.

I’m at a point in my training now where I need some smooth sailing, so here’s hoping that nothing else gets in the way.

If you ever find yourself in the same boat (we all do) here’s a great guide for how to get yourself back on track.
